1. What A question not put by the Jew as objection, (as Stuart supposes,) but stated by the apostle to start his argument.
The flesh In opposition to the spirit, as in Galatians 3:3, where the flesh refers to legal works as a means of justification, and the spirit refers to spiritual faith as the means. Hence the present question signifies, What in the matter of justification did Abraham attain by legal works? The phrase as pertaining to the flesh cannot, according to the Greek, qualify father.
