(1717-1777) Jesuit missionary and ethnographer, born Schlettstadt, Alsace; died Neuburg, Bavaria. He spent 19 years on the Californian mission, till the expulsion of the Jesuits, 1767. In 1773 he published a work on Lower California, which gives an account of the topography, the Indian customs and language, and the history of the mission. A revised edition was issued by the Smithsonian Institution, 1863-1864.
