His Fundamental Philosophy, an exposition of Saint Thomas's system in the light of 19th-century intellectual conditions, won for him a place among the philosophers of modern times. Protestantism Compared with Catholicism in Their Relations with European Civilization (1844), a reply to Guizot's History of Civilization in Europe, is a philosophy of Christianity, with a critical analysis of the basic principles and influence of the two systems of religion.
