Cartographer, geographer, and navigator, born Nuremberg, Germany, 1459; died in Lisbon, Portugal in 1507. He was appointed by the King of Portugal member of a commission for determining latitude. He later accompanied Cão on his expedition along the west coast of Africa, and in 1492 made his geographical globe, the oldest existing, with the aid of the Nuremberg humanist, Schedel.
