Jesuit missionary in China, born Graz, Syria, 1625; died 1684. In 1671 he became court mathematician of Emperor Kang-he. His Chinese-Latin dictionary was probably the first written, and he collaborated with his fellow-Jesuit, Intorcetta, in making Confucius known to Europeans.
