Journalist, born Vercheres, Quebec, Canada, 1799; died Montreal, Canada, 1852. He founded the Society of Saint John the Baptist for the purpose of preserving the religion, institutions, and language of the French Canadians. The maple-leaf, which he chose as emblem of Canada, has since been universally accepted there. He published the periodicals "Le Patriote Canadien" and "Minerve."
