As deacon he accompanied Pope Constantine to Constantinople to discuss the canons of the Quinisext Council with Justinian II. As pope, he upheld the primacy of the Holy See, and opposed the iconoclastic edicts of Leo the Isaurian, while nevertheless giving him the allegiance due to a temporal sovereign. His opposition to the Byzantine Empire brought the Lombards in union with the papacy. He sent Saint Boniface to Germany, and repaired Monte Cassino and the walls of Rome.
