Judge of Israel, a Galaadite who, on account of his illegitimate birth, had been cast out from his home and people. When he was later appealed to by the elders of Galaad for help against the Ammonites, he consented to lead them and vowed that if he should be given the victory over Ammon he would sacrifice to the Lord whosoever should come forth from his house to meet him on his return. The first person to come forth to meet him was his only daughter. After a respite of two months, during which she bewailed her virginity, she returned to her father, who thereupon fulfilled his vow.
