Central Asian republic. A land of nomads for much of its history, it was annexed by Russia in 1864. It regained independence in 1991 following the collapse of the Soviet Union. It is a primarily Muslim and Russian Orthodox country; there are approximately 500 Catholics in a population of about 5,000,000. Ecclesiastically the country is governed by the Apostolic Administration of Kyrgyzstan. See also
