Name given to preachers of indulgences in the Middle Ages. They preached to obtain alms for building churches, constructing bridges, supporting the Crusades, etc. Unfortunately the practise gave rise to many abuses which led the Council of Trent to forbid the offer of any indulgence conditional on money contributions for a specified object.
