A Canaanitish city afterwards called Hormah, one of the "uttermost cities of Judah southwards," afterwards assigned to Simeon, Joshua 12:14 15:30 19:4 . The name is supposed to be traceable in Sufah, a long and rough pass leading from the south up into the mountains of Judah. It was at Zephath that the Israelites were repulsed in attempting to ascend from Kadesh, Numbers 14:40-45 21:3 Deuteronomy 1:44 Judges 1:17 .
