The region of Iturea lay between the Sea of Galilee and Damascus, and in early New Testament times was governed by Herod Philip, a son of Herod the Great (Luke 3:1; see HEROD). It was on the edge of the tableland region formerly called Bashan (Numbers 21:33; Psalms 22:12; see BASHAN).
