<h3>A Lament and Call to Repentance</h3>5 Hear this word, Israel, this lament I take up concerning you:<poetry> 2 <poetry>“Fallen is Virgin Israel, <indent>never to rise again,</indent> deserted in her own land, <indent>with no one to lift her up. ”</indent></poetry> 3 This is what the Sovereign Lord says to Israel:<poetry>“Your city that marches out a thousand strong <indent>will have only a hundred left;</indent> your town that marches out a hundred strong <indent>will have only ten left. ”</indent></poetry> 4 This is what the Lord says to Israel:<poetry>“Seek me and live; 5 <poetry>    do not seek Bethel,</indent> do not go to Gilgal, <indent>do not journey to Beersheba. </indent> For Gilgal will surely go into exile, <indent>and Bethel will be reduced to nothing. ”</indent> </poetry> 6 <poetry>Seek the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> and live, <indent>or he will sweep through the tribes of Joseph like a fire; </indent> it will devour them, <indent>and Bethel will have no one to quench it. </indent><poetry></poetry> 7 <poetry>There are those who turn justice into bitterness <indent>and cast righteousness to the ground. </indent><poetry></poetry> 8 <poetry>He who made the Pleiades and Orion, <indent>who turns midnight into dawn </indent> <indent>and darkens day into night, </indent> who calls for the waters of the sea <indent>and pours them out over the face of the land—</indent> <indent>the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> is his name. </indent> </poetry> 9 <poetry>With a blinding flash he destroys the stronghold <indent>and brings the fortified city to ruin. </indent><poetry></poetry> 10 <poetry>There are those who hate the one who upholds justice in court <indent>and detest the one who tells the truth. </indent><poetry></poetry> 11 <poetry>You levy a straw tax on the poor <indent>and impose a tax on their grain.</indent> Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, <indent>you will not live in them; </indent> though you have planted lush vineyards, <indent>you will not drink their wine. </indent> </poetry> 12 <poetry>For I know how many are your offenses <indent>and how great your sins. </indent><poetry>There are those who oppress the innocent and take bribes <indent>and deprive the poor of justice in the courts. </indent> </poetry> 13 <poetry>Therefore the prudent keep quiet in such times, <indent>for the times are evil. </indent><poetry></poetry> 14 <poetry>Seek good, not evil, <indent>that you may live. </indent> Then the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> God Almighty will be with you, <indent>just as you say he is.</indent> </poetry> 15 <poetry>Hate evil, love good; <indent>maintain justice in the courts. </indent> Perhaps the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> God Almighty will have mercy <indent>on the remnant of Joseph.</indent></poetry> 16 Therefore this is what the Lord, the Lord God Almighty, says:<poetry>“There will be wailing in all the streets <indent>and cries of anguish in every public square.</indent> The farmers will be summoned to weep <indent>and the mourners to wail.</indent> 17 <poetry>There will be wailing in all the vineyards, <indent>for I will pass through your midst,”</indent> says the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>. </poetry> <h3>The Day of the Lord</h3> 18 <poetry>Woe to you who long <indent>for the day of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>! </indent> Why do you long for the day of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>? <indent>That day will be darkness, not light. </indent> </poetry> 19 <poetry>It will be as though a man fled from a lion <indent>only to meet a bear, </indent> as though he entered his house <indent>and rested his hand on the wall</indent> <indent>only to have a snake bite him. </indent> </poetry> 20 <poetry>Will not the day of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> be darkness, not light— <indent>pitch-dark, without a ray of brightness? </indent><poetry></poetry> 21 <poetry>“I hate, I despise your religious festivals; <indent>your assemblies are a stench to me.</indent> </poetry> 22 <poetry>Even though you bring me burnt offerings and grain offerings, <indent>I will not accept them. </indent> Though you bring choice fellowship offerings, <indent>I will have no regard for them. </indent> </poetry> 23 <poetry>Away with the noise of your songs! <indent>I will not listen to the music of your harps. </indent> </poetry> 24 <poetry>But let justice roll on like a river, <indent>righteousness like a never-failing stream! </indent><poetry></poetry> 25 <poetry>“Did you bring me sacrifices and offerings <indent>forty years in the wilderness, people of Israel?</indent> </poetry> 26 <poetry>You have lifted up the shrine of your king, <indent>the pedestal of your idols, </indent> <indent>the star of your god —</indent> <indent>which you made for yourselves.</indent> </poetry> 27 <poetry>Therefore I will send you into exile beyond Damascus,” <indent>says the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, whose name is God Almighty. </indent></poetry>
