Genesis 12:1

The Lord had said to Abram, “Go from your country, your people and your father’s household<cr>1</cr> to the land<cr>2</cr> I will show you.<cr>3</cr> <pb/><poetry>

“I will make you into a great nation,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and I will bless you;<cr>2</cr> </indent> I will make your name great, <indent>and you will be a blessing.<ft>1</ft><cr>3</cr> </indent>

Genesis 12:2

I will bless those who bless you, <indent>and whoever curses you I will curse;<cr>1</cr> </indent> and all peoples on earth <indent>will be blessed through you.<cr>2</cr> ”<ft>1</ft></indent>

Genesis 12:3

So Abram went, as the Lord had told him; and Lot<cr>1</cr> went with him. Abram was seventy-five years old<cr>2</cr> when he set out from Harran.<cr>3</cr>

Genesis 12:4

He took his wife Sarai,<cr>1</cr> his nephew Lot, all the possessions they had accumulated<cr>2</cr> and the people<cr>3</cr> they had acquired in Harran, and they set out for the land of Canaan,<cr>4</cr> and they arrived there.

Genesis 12:5

Abram traveled through the land<cr>1</cr> as far as the site of the great tree of Moreh<cr>2</cr> at Shechem.<cr>3</cr> At that time the Canaanites<cr>4</cr> were in the land.

Genesis 12:6

The Lord appeared to Abram<cr>1</cr> and said, “To your offspring<ft>1</ft> I will give this land.<cr>2</cr> ”<cr>3</cr> So he built an altar there to the Lord,<cr>4</cr> who had appeared to him.

Genesis 12:7

From there he went on toward the hills east of Bethel<cr>1</cr> and pitched his tent,<cr>2</cr> with Bethel on the west and Ai<cr>3</cr> on the east. There he built an altar to the Lord and called on the name of the Lord.<cr>4</cr>

Genesis 12:8

Then Abram set out and continued toward the Negev.<cr>1</cr>

Now there was a famine in the land,<cr>1</cr> and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe.<cr>2</cr>

As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai,<cr>1</cr> “I know what a beautiful woman<cr>2</cr> you are.

Genesis 12:11

When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live.

Genesis 12:12

Say you are my sister,<cr>1</cr> so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.”

Genesis 12:13

When Abram came to Egypt, the Egyptians saw that Sarai was a very beautiful woman.<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 12:14

And when Pharaoh’s officials saw her, they praised her to Pharaoh, and she was taken into his palace.

Genesis 12:15

He treated Abram well for her sake, and Abram acquired sheep and cattle, male and female donkeys, male and female servants, and camels.<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 12:16

But the Lord inflicted<cr>1</cr> serious diseases on Pharaoh and his household<cr>2</cr> because of Abram’s wife Sarai.

Genesis 12:17

So Pharaoh summoned Abram. “What have you done to me?”<cr>1</cr> he said. “Why didn’t you tell me she was your wife?<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 12:18

Why did you say, ‘She is my sister,’<cr>1</cr> so that I took her to be my wife? Now then, here is your wife. Take her and go!”

Genesis 12:19

Then Pharaoh gave orders about Abram to his men, and they sent him on his way, with his wife and everything he had.

Genesis 12:20

Genesis 13:1

So Abram went up from Egypt<cr>1</cr> to the Negev,<cr>2</cr> with his wife and everything he had, and Lot<cr>3</cr> went with him.

Abram had become very wealthy<cr>1</cr> in livestock<cr>2</cr> and in silver and gold.

Genesis 13:2

From the Negev<cr>1</cr> he went from place to place until he came to Bethel,<cr>2</cr> to the place between Bethel and Ai<cr>3</cr> where his tent had been earlier

Genesis 13:3

and where he had first built an altar.<cr>1</cr> There Abram called on the name of the Lord.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 13:4

Now Lot,<cr>1</cr> who was moving about with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.

Genesis 13:5

But the land could not support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 13:6

And quarreling<cr>1</cr> arose between Abram’s herders and Lot’s. The Canaanites<cr>2</cr> and Perizzites<cr>3</cr> were also living in the land<cr>4</cr> at that time.

Genesis 13:7

So Abram said to Lot,<cr>1</cr> “Let’s not have any quarreling between you and me,<cr>2</cr> or between your herders and mine, for we are close relatives.<cr>3</cr>

Genesis 13:8

Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.”<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 13:9

Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain<cr>1</cr> of the Jordan toward Zoar<cr>2</cr> was well watered, like the garden of the Lord,<cr>3</cr> like the land of Egypt.<cr>4</cr> (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom<cr>5</cr> and Gomorrah.)<cr>6</cr>

Genesis 13:10

So Lot chose for himself the whole plain of the Jordan and set out toward the east. The two men parted company:

Genesis 13:11

Abram lived in the land of Canaan,<cr>1</cr> while Lot<cr>2</cr> lived among the cities of the plain<cr>3</cr> and pitched his tents near Sodom.<cr>4</cr>

Genesis 13:12

Now the people of Sodom<cr>1</cr> were wicked and were sinning greatly against the Lord.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 13:13

The Lord said to Abram after Lot had parted from him, “Look around from where you are, to the north and south, to the east and west.<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 13:14

All the land that you see I will give to you and your offspring<ft>1</ft> forever.<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 13:15

I will make your offspring like the dust of the earth, so that if anyone could count the dust, then your offspring could be counted.<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 13:16

Go, walk through the length and breadth of the land,<cr>1</cr> for I am giving it to you.”<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 13:17

So Abram went to live near the great trees of Mamre<cr>1</cr> at Hebron,<cr>2</cr> where he pitched his tents. There he built an altar to the Lord.<cr>3</cr>

Genesis 13:18

Genesis 14:1

At the time when Amraphel was king of Shinar,<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr> Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer<cr>2</cr> king of Elam<cr>3</cr> and Tidal king of Goyim,

these kings went to war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim,<cr>1</cr> and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 14:2

All these latter kings joined forces in the Valley of Siddim<cr>1</cr> (that is, the Dead Sea Valley<cr>2</cr> ).

Genesis 14:3

For twelve years they had been subject to Kedorlaomer,<cr>1</cr> but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

Genesis 14:4

In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer<cr>1</cr> and the kings allied with him went out and defeated the Rephaites<cr>2</cr> in Ashteroth Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites<cr>3</cr> in Shaveh Kiriathaim

Genesis 14:5

and the Horites<cr>1</cr> in the hill country of Seir,<cr>2</cr> as far as El Paran<cr>3</cr> near the desert.

Genesis 14:6

Then they turned back and went to En Mishpat (that is, Kadesh),<cr>1</cr> and they conquered the whole territory of the Amalekites,<cr>2</cr> as well as the Amorites<cr>3</cr> who were living in Hazezon Tamar.<cr>4</cr>

Genesis 14:7

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah,<cr>1</cr> the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim<cr>2</cr> and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar)<cr>3</cr> marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim<cr>4</cr>

Genesis 14:8

against Kedorlaomer<cr>1</cr> king of Elam,<cr>2</cr> Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar and Arioch king of Ellasar—four kings against five.

Genesis 14:9

Now the Valley of Siddim<cr>1</cr> was full of tar<cr>2</cr> pits, and when the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah<cr>3</cr> fled, some of the men fell into them and the rest fled to the hills.<cr>4</cr>

Genesis 14:10

The four kings seized all the goods<cr>1</cr> of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away.

Genesis 14:11

They also carried off Abram’s nephew Lot<cr>1</cr> and his possessions, since he was living in Sodom.

Genesis 14:12

A man who had escaped came and reported this to Abram the Hebrew.<cr>1</cr> Now Abram was living near the great trees of Mamre<cr>2</cr> the Amorite, a brother<ft>1</ft> of Eshkol<cr>3</cr> and Aner, all of whom were allied with Abram.

Genesis 14:13

When Abram heard that his relative<cr>1</cr> had been taken captive, he called out the 318 trained<cr>2</cr> men born in his household<cr>3</cr> and went in pursuit as far as Dan.<cr>4</cr>

Genesis 14:14

During the night Abram divided his men<cr>1</cr> to attack them and he routed them, pursuing them as far as Hobah, north of Damascus.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 14:15

He recovered<cr>1</cr> all the goods<cr>2</cr> and brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the other people.

Genesis 14:16

After Abram returned from defeating Kedorlaomer<cr>1</cr> and the kings allied with him, the king of Sodom<cr>2</cr> came out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King’s Valley).<cr>3</cr>

Genesis 14:17

Then Melchizedek<cr>1</cr> king of Salem<cr>2</cr> brought out bread<cr>3</cr> and wine.<cr>4</cr> He was priest of God Most High,<cr>5</cr>

Genesis 14:18

and he blessed Abram,<cr>1</cr> saying,<pb/><poetry>“Blessed be Abram by God Most High,<cr>2</cr> <indent>Creator of heaven and earth.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Genesis 14:19

And praise be to God Most High,<cr>1</cr> <indent>who delivered your enemies into your hand.”</indent><pb/>Then Abram gave him a tenth of everything.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 14:20

The king of Sodom<cr>1</cr> said to Abram, “Give me the people and keep the goods<cr>2</cr> for yourself.”

Genesis 14:21

But Abram said to the king of Sodom,<cr>1</cr> “With raised hand<cr>2</cr> I have sworn an oath to the Lord, God Most High,<cr>3</cr> Creator of heaven and earth,<cr>4</cr>

Genesis 14:22

that I will accept nothing belonging to you,<cr>1</cr> not even a thread or the strap of a sandal, so that you will never be able to say, ‘I made Abram rich.’

Genesis 14:23

I will accept nothing but what my men have eaten and the share that belongs to the men who went with me—to Aner, Eshkol and Mamre.<cr>1</cr> Let them have their share.”

Genesis 14:24

Genesis 15:1

After this, the word of the Lord came to Abram<cr>1</cr> in a vision:<cr>2</cr> <pb/><poetry>“Do not be afraid,<cr>3</cr> Abram. <indent>I am your shield,<ft>1</ft><cr>4</cr> </indent> <indent>your very great reward.<ft>2</ft><cr>5</cr> ”</indent></poetry>

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,<cr>1</cr> what can you give me since I remain childless<cr>2</cr> and the one who will inherit<ft>1</ft> my estate is Eliezer of Damascus?<cr>3</cr> ”

Genesis 15:2

And Abram said, “You have given me no children; so a servant<cr>1</cr> in my household<cr>2</cr> will be my heir.”

Genesis 15:3

Then the word of the Lord came to him: “This man will not be your heir, but a son who is your own flesh and blood will be your heir.<cr>1</cr> ”

Genesis 15:4

He took him outside and said, “Look up at the sky and count the stars<cr>1</cr> —if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring<ft>1</ft> be.”<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 15:5

Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness.<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 15:6

He also said to him, “I am the Lord, who brought you out<cr>1</cr> of Ur of the Chaldeans<cr>2</cr> to give you this land to take possession of it.”<cr>3</cr>

Genesis 15:7

But Abram said, “Sovereign Lord,<cr>1</cr> how can I know<cr>2</cr> that I will gain possession of it?”<cr>3</cr>

Genesis 15:8

So the Lord said to him, “Bring me a heifer,<cr>1</cr> a goat and a ram, each three years old,<cr>2</cr> along with a dove and a young pigeon.<cr>3</cr> ”

Genesis 15:9

Abram brought all these to him, cut them in two and arranged the halves opposite each other;<cr>1</cr> the birds, however, he did not cut in half.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 15:10

Then birds of prey came down on the carcasses,<cr>1</cr> but Abram drove them away.

Genesis 15:11

As the sun was setting, Abram fell into a deep sleep,<cr>1</cr> and a thick and dreadful darkness came over him.

Genesis 15:12

Then the Lord said to him, “Know for certain that for four hundred years<cr>1</cr> your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own and that they will be enslaved<cr>2</cr> and mistreated there.

Genesis 15:13

But I will punish the nation they serve as slaves, and afterward they will come out<cr>1</cr> with great possessions.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 15:14

You, however, will go to your ancestors<cr>1</cr> in peace and be buried at a good old age.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 15:15

In the fourth generation<cr>1</cr> your descendants will come back here,<cr>2</cr> for the sin of the Amorites<cr>3</cr> has not yet reached its full measure.”

Genesis 15:16

When the sun had set and darkness had fallen, a smoking firepot with a blazing torch<cr>1</cr> appeared and passed between the pieces.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 15:17

On that day the Lord made a covenant with Abram<cr>1</cr> and said, “To your descendants I give this land,<cr>2</cr> from the Wadi<ft>1</ft> of Egypt<cr>3</cr> to the great river, the Euphrates<cr>4</cr> —

the land of the Kenites,<cr>1</cr> Kenizzites, Kadmonites,

Genesis 15:19

Hittites,<cr>1</cr> Perizzites,<cr>2</cr> Rephaites,<cr>3</cr>

Genesis 15:20

Amorites, Canaanites, Girgashites and Jebusites.”<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 15:21

Genesis 16:1

Now Sarai,<cr>1</cr> Abram’s wife, had borne him no children.<cr>2</cr> But she had an Egyptian slave<cr>3</cr> named Hagar;<cr>4</cr>

so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children.<cr>1</cr> Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”<cr>2</cr> <pb/>Abram agreed to what Sarai said.

Genesis 16:2

So after Abram had been living in Canaan<cr>1</cr> ten years,<cr>2</cr> Sarai his wife took her Egyptian slave Hagar and gave her to her husband to be his wife.

Genesis 16:3

He slept with Hagar,<cr>1</cr> and she conceived.<pb/>When she knew she was pregnant, she began to despise her mistress.<cr>2</cr>

Genesis 16:4

Then Sarai said to Abram, “You are responsible for the wrong I am suffering. I put my slave in your arms, and now that she knows she is pregnant, she despises me. May the Lord judge between you and me.”<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 16:5

“Your slave is in your hands,<cr>1</cr> ” Abram said. “Do with her whatever you think best.” Then Sarai mistreated<cr>2</cr> Hagar; so she fled from her.

Genesis 16:6

The angel of the Lord<cr>1</cr> found Hagar near a spring<cr>2</cr> in the desert; it was the spring that is beside the road to Shur.<cr>3</cr>

Genesis 16:7

And he said, “Hagar,<cr>1</cr> slave of Sarai, where have you come from, and where are you going?”<cr>2</cr> <pb/>“I’m running away from my mistress Sarai,” she answered.

Genesis 16:8

Then the angel of the Lord told her, “Go back to your mistress and submit to her.”

Genesis 16:9

The angel added, “I will increase your descendants so much that they will be too numerous to count.”<cr>1</cr>

Genesis 16:10

The angel of the Lord<cr>1</cr> also said to her:<pb/><poetry>“You are now pregnant <indent>and you will give birth to a son.<cr>2</cr> </indent> You shall name him<cr>3</cr> Ishmael,<ft>1</ft><cr>4</cr> <indent>for the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> has heard of your misery.<cr>5</cr> </indent>
