Numbers 22:1

Then the Israelites traveled to the plains of Moab<cr>1</cr> and camped along the Jordan<cr>2</cr> across from Jericho.<cr>3</cr>

Now Balak son of Zippor<cr>1</cr> saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites,

Numbers 22:2

and Moab was terrified because there were so many people. Indeed, Moab was filled with dread<cr>1</cr> because of the Israelites.

Numbers 22:3

The Moabites<cr>1</cr> said to the elders of Midian,<cr>2</cr> “This horde is going to lick up everything<cr>3</cr> around us, as an ox licks up the grass of the field.<cr>4</cr> ”<pb/>So Balak son of Zippor, who was king of Moab at that time,

Numbers 22:4

sent messengers to summon Balaam son of Beor,<cr>1</cr> who was at Pethor, near the Euphrates River,<cr>2</cr> in his native land. Balak said:<pb/>“A people has come out of Egypt;<cr>3</cr> they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me.

Numbers 22:5

Now come and put a curse<cr>1</cr> on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land.<cr>2</cr> For I know that whoever you bless is blessed, and whoever you curse is cursed.”

Numbers 22:6

The elders of Moab and Midian left, taking with them the fee for divination.<cr>1</cr> When they came to Balaam, they told him what Balak had said.

Numbers 22:7

“Spend the night here,” Balaam said to them, “and I will report back to you with the answer the Lord gives me.<cr>1</cr> ” So the Moabite officials stayed with him.

Numbers 22:8

God came to Balaam<cr>1</cr> and asked,<cr>2</cr> “Who are these men with you?”

Numbers 22:9

Balaam said to God, “Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, sent me this message:

Numbers 22:10

‘A people that has come out of Egypt covers the face of the land. Now come and put a curse on them for me. Perhaps then I will be able to fight them and drive them away.’”

Numbers 22:11

But God said to Balaam, “Do not go with them. You must not put a curse on those people, because they are blessed.<cr>1</cr> ”

Numbers 22:12

The next morning Balaam got up and said to Balak’s officials, “Go back to your own country, for the Lord has refused to let me go with you.”

Numbers 22:13

So the Moabite officials returned to Balak and said, “Balaam refused to come with us.”

Numbers 22:14

Then Balak sent other officials, more numerous and more distinguished than the first.

Numbers 22:15

They came to Balaam and said:<pb/>“This is what Balak son of Zippor says: Do not let anything keep you from coming to me,

Numbers 22:16

because I will reward you handsomely<cr>1</cr> and do whatever you say. Come and put a curse<cr>2</cr> on these people for me.”

Numbers 22:17

But Balaam answered them, “Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything great or small to go beyond the command of the Lord my God.<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 22:18

Now spend the night here so that I can find out what else the Lord will tell me.<cr>1</cr> ”

Numbers 22:19

That night God came to Balaam<cr>1</cr> and said, “Since these men have come to summon you, go with them, but do only what I tell you.”<cr>2</cr>

Numbers 22:20

Numbers 22:21

Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey and went with the Moabite officials.

But God was very angry<cr>1</cr> when he went, and the angel of the Lord<cr>2</cr> stood in the road to oppose him. Balaam was riding on his donkey, and his two servants were with him.

Numbers 22:22

When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with a drawn sword<cr>1</cr> in his hand, it turned off the road into a field. Balaam beat it<cr>2</cr> to get it back on the road.

Numbers 22:23

Then the angel of the Lord stood in a narrow path through the vineyards, with walls on both sides.

Numbers 22:24

When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it pressed close to the wall, crushing Balaam’s foot against it. So he beat the donkey again.

Numbers 22:25

Then the angel of the Lord moved on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no room to turn, either to the right or to the left.

Numbers 22:26

When the donkey saw the angel of the Lord, it lay down under Balaam, and he was angry<cr>1</cr> and beat it with his staff.

Numbers 22:27

Then the Lord opened the donkey’s mouth,<cr>1</cr> and it said to Balaam, “What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?<cr>2</cr> ”

Numbers 22:28

Balaam answered the donkey, “You have made a fool of me! If only I had a sword in my hand, I would kill you right now.<cr>1</cr> ”

Numbers 22:29

The donkey said to Balaam, “Am I not your own donkey, which you have always ridden, to this day? Have I been in the habit of doing this to you?”<pb/>“No,” he said.

Numbers 22:30

Then the Lord opened Balaam’s eyes,<cr>1</cr> and he saw the angel of the Lord standing in the road with his sword drawn. So he bowed low and fell facedown.

Numbers 22:31

The angel of the Lord asked him, “Why have you beaten your donkey these three times? I have come here to oppose you because your path is a reckless one before me.<ft>1</ft>

Numbers 22:32

The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If it had not turned away, I would certainly have killed you by now,<cr>1</cr> but I would have spared it.”

Numbers 22:33

Balaam said to the angel of the Lord, “I have sinned.<cr>1</cr> I did not realize you were standing in the road to oppose me. Now if you are displeased, I will go back.”

Numbers 22:34

The angel of the Lord said to Balaam, “Go with the men, but speak only what I tell you.” So Balaam went with Balak’s officials.

Numbers 22:35

When Balak<cr>1</cr> heard that Balaam was coming, he went out to meet him at the Moabite town on the Arnon<cr>2</cr> border, at the edge of his territory.

Numbers 22:36

Balak said to Balaam, “Did I not send you an urgent summons? Why didn’t you come to me? Am I really not able to reward you?”

Numbers 22:37

“Well, I have come to you now,” Balaam replied. “But I can’t say whatever I please. I must speak only what God puts in my mouth.”<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 22:38

Then Balaam went with Balak to Kiriath Huzoth.

Numbers 22:39

Balak sacrificed cattle and sheep,<cr>1</cr> and gave some to Balaam and the officials who were with him.

Numbers 22:40

The next morning Balak took Balaam up to Bamoth Baal,<cr>1</cr> and from there he could see the outskirts of the Israelite camp.<cr>2</cr>

Numbers 22:41

Numbers 23:1

Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams<cr>1</cr> for me.”

Balak did as Balaam said, and the two of them offered a bull and a ram on each altar.<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 23:2

Then Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I go aside. Perhaps the Lord will come to meet with me.<cr>1</cr> Whatever he reveals to me I will tell you.” Then he went off to a barren height.

Numbers 23:3

God met with him,<cr>1</cr> and Balaam said, “I have prepared seven altars, and on each altar I have offered a bull and a ram.”

Numbers 23:4

The Lord put a word in Balaam’s mouth<cr>1</cr> and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”<cr>2</cr>

Numbers 23:5

So he went back to him and found him standing beside his offering, with all the Moabite officials.<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 23:6

Then Balaam<cr>1</cr> spoke his message:<cr>2</cr> <pb/><poetry>“Balak brought me from Aram,<cr>3</cr> <indent>the king of Moab from the eastern mountains.<cr>4</cr> </indent> ‘Come,’ he said, ‘curse Jacob for me; <indent>come, denounce Israel.’<cr>5</cr> </indent>

Numbers 23:7

How can I curse <indent>those whom God has not cursed?<cr>1</cr> </indent> How can I denounce <indent>those whom the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> has not denounced?<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Numbers 23:8

From the rocky peaks I see them, <indent>from the heights I view them.<cr>1</cr> </indent> I see a people who live apart <indent>and do not consider themselves one of the nations.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Numbers 23:9

Who can count the dust of Jacob<cr>1</cr> <indent>or number even a fourth of Israel?</indent> Let me die the death of the righteous,<cr>2</cr> <indent>and may my final end be like theirs!<cr>3</cr> ”</indent>

Numbers 23:10

Balak said to Balaam, “What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies,<cr>1</cr> but you have done nothing but bless them!”<cr>2</cr>

Numbers 23:11

He answered, “Must I not speak what the Lord puts in my mouth?”<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 23:12

Numbers 23:13

Then Balak said to him, “Come with me to another place<cr>1</cr> where you can see them; you will not see them all but only the outskirts of their camp.<cr>2</cr> And from there, curse them for me.<cr>3</cr> ”

So he took him to the field of Zophim on the top of Pisgah,<cr>1</cr> and there he built seven altars and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.<cr>2</cr>

Numbers 23:14

Balaam said to Balak, “Stay here beside your offering while I meet with him over there.”

Numbers 23:15

The Lord met with Balaam and put a word in his mouth<cr>1</cr> and said, “Go back to Balak and give him this word.”

Numbers 23:16

So he went to him and found him standing beside his offering, with the Moabite officials.<cr>1</cr> Balak asked him, “What did the Lord say?”

Numbers 23:17

Then he spoke his message:<cr>1</cr> <pb/><poetry>“Arise, Balak, and listen; <indent>hear me, son of Zippor.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Numbers 23:18

God is not human,<cr>1</cr> that he should lie,<cr>2</cr> <indent>not a human being, that he should change his mind.<cr>3</cr> </indent> Does he speak and then not act? <indent>Does he promise<cr>4</cr> and not fulfill?</indent>

Numbers 23:19

I have received a command to bless;<cr>1</cr> <indent>he has blessed,<cr>2</cr> and I cannot change it.<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Numbers 23:20

“No misfortune is seen in Jacob,<cr>1</cr> <indent>no misery observed<ft>1</ft> in Israel.<cr>2</cr> </indent> The <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> their God is with them;<cr>3</cr> <indent>the shout of the King<cr>4</cr> is among them.</indent>

Numbers 23:21

God brought them out of Egypt;<cr>1</cr> <indent>they have the strength of a wild ox.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Numbers 23:22

There is no divination against<ft>1</ft> Jacob, <indent>no evil omens<cr>1</cr> against<ft>2</ft> Israel.</indent> It will now be said of Jacob <indent>and of Israel, ‘See what God has done!’</indent>

Numbers 23:23

The people rise like a lioness;<cr>1</cr> <indent>they rouse themselves like a lion<cr>2</cr> </indent> that does not rest till it devours its prey <indent>and drinks the blood<cr>3</cr> of its victims.”</indent>

Numbers 23:24

Then Balak said to Balaam, “Neither curse them at all nor bless them at all!”

Numbers 23:25

Balaam answered, “Did I not tell you I must do whatever the Lord says?”<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 23:26

Numbers 23:27

Then Balak said to Balaam, “Come, let me take you to another place.<cr>1</cr> Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me<cr>2</cr> from there.”

And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor,<cr>1</cr> overlooking the wasteland.

Numbers 23:28

Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.”

Numbers 23:29

Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 23:30

Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel,<cr>1</cr> he did not resort to divination<cr>2</cr> as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness.<cr>3</cr>

Numbers 24:1

When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 24:2

and he spoke his message:<pb/><poetry>“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, <indent>the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,<cr>1</cr> </indent>

Numbers 24:3

the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,<cr>1</cr> <indent>who sees a vision from the Almighty,<ft>1</ft><cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:</indent><pb/><poetry>

Numbers 24:4

“How beautiful are your tents,<cr>1</cr> Jacob, <indent>your dwelling places, Israel!</indent><pb/><poetry>

Numbers 24:5

“Like valleys they spread out, <indent>like gardens beside a river,<cr>1</cr> </indent> like aloes<cr>2</cr> planted by the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>like cedars beside the waters.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Numbers 24:6

Water will flow from their buckets; <indent>their seed will have abundant water.</indent><pb/><poetry>“Their king will be greater than Agag;<cr>1</cr> <indent>their kingdom will be exalted.<cr>2</cr> </indent></poetry><pb/><poetry>

Numbers 24:7

“God brought them out of Egypt; <indent>they have the strength of a wild ox.</indent> They devour hostile nations <indent>and break their bones in pieces;<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>with their arrows they pierce them.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Numbers 24:8

Like a lion they crouch and lie down, <indent>like a lioness<cr>1</cr> —who dares to rouse them?</indent><pb/><poetry>“May those who bless you be blessed<cr>2</cr> <indent>and those who curse you be cursed!”<cr>3</cr> </indent></poetry>

Numbers 24:9

Then Balak’s anger burned<cr>1</cr> against Balaam. He struck his hands together<cr>2</cr> and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies,<cr>3</cr> but you have blessed them<cr>4</cr> these three times.<cr>5</cr>

Numbers 24:10

Now leave at once and go home!<cr>1</cr> I said I would reward you handsomely,<cr>2</cr> but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.”

Numbers 24:11

Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 24:12

‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord<cr>1</cr> —and I must say only what the Lord says’?<cr>2</cr>

Numbers 24:13

Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”<cr>1</cr>

Numbers 24:14

Numbers 24:15

Then he spoke his message:<pb/><poetry>“The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, <indent>the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,</indent>

the prophecy of one who hears the words<cr>1</cr> of God, <indent>who has knowledge from the Most High,<cr>2</cr> </indent> who sees a vision from the Almighty, <indent>who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:</indent><pb/><poetry>

“I see him, but not now; <indent>I behold him, but not near.<cr>1</cr> </indent> A star will come out of Jacob;<cr>2</cr> <indent>a scepter will rise out of Israel.<cr>3</cr> </indent> He will crush the foreheads of Moab,<cr>4</cr> <indent>the skulls<ft>1</ft><cr>5</cr> of<ft>2</ft> all the people of Sheth.<ft>3</ft></indent>

Numbers 24:17

Edom<cr>1</cr> will be conquered; <indent>Seir,<cr>2</cr> his enemy, will be conquered,<cr>3</cr> </indent> <indent>but Israel<cr>4</cr> will grow strong.</indent>

Numbers 24:18

A ruler will come out of Jacob<cr>1</cr> <indent>and destroy the survivors of the city.”</indent>

Then Balaam saw Amalek<cr>1</cr> and spoke his message:<pb/><poetry>“Amalek was first among the nations, <indent>but their end will be utter destruction.”<cr>2</cr> </indent></poetry>

Then he saw the Kenites<cr>1</cr> and spoke his message:<pb/><poetry>“Your dwelling place is secure,<cr>2</cr> <indent>your nest is set in a rock;</indent>

Perhaps it will please God to let you curse them for me   from there.” 28 And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor,   overlooking the wasteland. 29 Balaam said, “Build me seven altars here, and prepare seven bulls and seven rams for me.” 30 Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered a bull and a ram on each altar.   1 Now when Balaam saw that it pleased the Lord to bless Israel,   he did not resort to divination   as at other times, but turned his face toward the wilderness.   2 When Balaam looked out and saw Israel encamped tribe by tribe, the Spirit of God came on him   3 and he spoke his message: “The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,    4 the prophecy of one who hears the words of God,   who sees a vision from the Almighty,    who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:  5 “How beautiful are your tents,   Jacob, your dwelling places, Israel!  6 “Like valleys they spread out, like gardens beside a river,   like aloes   planted by the Lord, like cedars beside the waters.    7 Water will flow from their buckets; their seed will have abundant water. “Their king will be greater than Agag;   their kingdom will be exalted.    8 “God brought them out of Egypt; they have the strength of a wild ox. They devour hostile nations and break their bones in pieces;   with their arrows they pierce them.    9 Like a lion they crouch and lie down, like a lioness  —who dares to rouse them? “May those who bless you be blessed   and those who curse you be cursed!”   10 Then Balak’s anger burned   against Balaam. He struck his hands together   and said to him, “I summoned you to curse my enemies,   but you have blessed them   these three times.   11 Now leave at once and go home!   I said I would reward you handsomely,   but the Lord has kept you from being rewarded.” 12 Balaam answered Balak, “Did I not tell the messengers you sent me,   13 ‘Even if Balak gave me all the silver and gold in his palace, I could not do anything of my own accord, good or bad, to go beyond the command of the Lord  —and I must say only what the Lord says’?   14 Now I am going back to my people, but come, let me warn you of what this people will do to your people in days to come.”   15 Then he spoke his message: “The prophecy of Balaam son of Beor, the prophecy of one whose eye sees clearly,  16 the prophecy of one who hears the words   of God, who has knowledge from the Most High,   who sees a vision from the Almighty, who falls prostrate, and whose eyes are opened:  17 “I see him, but not now; I behold him, but not near.   A star will come out of Jacob;   a scepter will rise out of Israel.   He will crush the foreheads of Moab,   the skulls    of  all the people of Sheth.   18 Edom   will be conquered; Seir,   his enemy, will be conquered,   but Israel   will grow strong.  19 A ruler will come out of Jacob   and destroy the survivors of the city.” 20 Then Balaam saw Amalek   and spoke his message: “Amalek was first among the nations, but their end will be utter destruction.”   21 Then he saw the Kenites   and spoke his message: “Your dwelling place is secure,   your nest is set in a rock;  22 yet you Kenites will be destroyed when Ashur   takes you captive.” 23 Then he spoke his message: “Alas! Who can live when God does this?   24     Ships will come from the shores of Cyprus;   they will subdue Ashur   and Eber,   but they too will come to ruin.  ” 25 Then Balaam   got up and returned home, and Balak went his own way.
