<h3>Obadiah’s Vision </h3>1 The vision of Obadiah.This is what the Sovereign Lord says about Edom —<poetry>We have heard a message from the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>: <indent>An envoy was sent to the nations to say,</indent> “Rise, let us go against her for battle” —</poetry><poetry> 2 <poetry>“See, I will make you small among the nations; <indent>you will be utterly despised.</indent> </poetry> 3 <poetry>The pride of your heart has deceived you, <indent>you who live in the clefts of the rocks </indent> <indent>and make your home on the heights,</indent> you who say to yourself, <indent>‘Who can bring me down to the ground?’ </indent> </poetry> 4 <poetry>Though you soar like the eagle <indent>and make your nest among the stars,</indent> <indent>from there I will bring you down,” </indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>. </poetry> 5 <poetry>“If thieves came to you, <indent>if robbers in the night—</indent> oh, what a disaster awaits you!— <indent>would they not steal only as much as they wanted?</indent> If grape pickers came to you, <indent>would they not leave a few grapes? </indent> </poetry> 6 <poetry>But how Esau will be ransacked, <indent>his hidden treasures pillaged!</indent> </poetry> 7 <poetry>All your allies will force you to the border; <indent>your friends will deceive and overpower you;</indent> those who eat your bread will set a trap for you, <indent>but you will not detect it.</indent><poetry></poetry> 8 <poetry>“In that day,” declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>“will I not destroy the wise men of Edom,</indent> <indent>those of understanding in the mountains of Esau?</indent> </poetry> 9 <poetry>Your warriors, Teman, will be terrified, <indent>and everyone in Esau’s mountains</indent> <indent>will be cut down in the slaughter.</indent> </poetry> 10 <poetry>Because of the violence against your brother Jacob, <indent>you will be covered with shame;</indent> <indent>you will be destroyed forever. </indent> </poetry> 11 <poetry>On the day you stood aloof <indent>while strangers carried off his wealth</indent> and foreigners entered his gates <indent>and cast lots for Jerusalem,</indent> <indent>you were like one of them. </indent> </poetry> 12 <poetry>You should not gloat over your brother <indent>in the day of his misfortune, </indent> nor rejoice over the people of Judah <indent>in the day of their destruction, </indent> nor boast so much <indent>in the day of their trouble. </indent> </poetry> 13 <poetry>You should not march through the gates of my people <indent>in the day of their disaster,</indent> nor gloat over them in their calamity <indent>in the day of their disaster,</indent> nor seize their wealth <indent>in the day of their disaster.</indent> </poetry> 14 <poetry>You should not wait at the crossroads <indent>to cut down their fugitives, </indent> nor hand over their survivors <indent>in the day of their trouble.</indent><poetry></poetry> 15 <poetry>“The day of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> is near <indent>for all nations.</indent> As you have done, it will be done to you; <indent>your deeds will return upon your own head.</indent> </poetry> 16 <poetry>Just as you drank on my holy hill, <indent>so all the nations will drink continually;</indent> they will drink and drink <indent>and be as if they had never been. </indent> </poetry> 17 <poetry>But on Mount Zion will be deliverance; <indent>it will be holy, </indent> <indent>and Jacob will possess his inheritance. </indent> </poetry> 18 <poetry>Jacob will be a fire <indent>and Joseph a flame;</indent> Esau will be stubble, <indent>and they will set him on fire and destroy him.</indent> There will be no survivors <indent>from Esau.”</indent> The <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> has spoken.<poetry></poetry> 19 <poetry>People from the Negev will occupy <indent>the mountains of Esau,</indent> and people from the foothills will possess <indent>the land of the Philistines. </indent> They will occupy the fields of Ephraim and Samaria, <indent>and Benjamin will possess Gilead.</indent> </poetry> 20 <poetry>This company of Israelite exiles who are in Canaan <indent>will possess the land as far as Zarephath; </indent> the exiles from Jerusalem who are in Sepharad <indent>will possess the towns of the Negev. </indent> </poetry> 21 <poetry>Deliverers will go up on Mount Zion <indent>to govern the mountains of Esau.</indent> <indent>And the kingdom will be the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>’s. </indent></poetry>
