<h3>BOOK III</h3><h3>Psalms 73–89</h3><h3>Psalm 73</h3><h3>A psalm of Asaph.</h3>73 <poetry>Surely God is good to Israel, <indent>to those who are pure in heart. </indent></poetry> 2 <poetry>But as for me, my feet had almost slipped; <indent>I had nearly lost my foothold. </indent> </poetry> 3 <poetry>For I envied the arrogant <indent>when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. </indent></poetry> 4 <poetry>They have no struggles; <indent>their bodies are healthy and strong. </indent> </poetry> 5 <poetry>They are free from common human burdens; <indent>they are not plagued by human ills.</indent> </poetry> 6 <poetry>Therefore pride is their necklace; <indent>they clothe themselves with violence. </indent> </poetry> 7 <poetry>From their callous hearts comes iniquity ; <indent>their evil imaginations have no limits.</indent> </poetry> 8 <poetry>They scoff, and speak with malice; <indent>with arrogance they threaten oppression. </indent> </poetry> 9 <poetry>Their mouths lay claim to heaven, <indent>and their tongues take possession of the earth.</indent> </poetry> 10 <poetry>Therefore their people turn to them <indent>and drink up waters in abundance. </indent> </poetry> 11 <poetry>They say, “How would God know? <indent>Does the Most High know anything?”</indent></poetry> 12 <poetry>This is what the wicked are like— <indent>always free of care, they go on amassing wealth. </indent></poetry> 13 <poetry>Surely in vain I have kept my heart pure <indent>and have washed my hands in innocence. </indent> </poetry> 14 <poetry>All day long I have been afflicted, <indent>and every morning brings new punishments.</indent></poetry> 15 <poetry>If I had spoken out like that, <indent>I would have betrayed your children.</indent> </poetry> 16 <poetry>When I tried to understand all this, <indent>it troubled me deeply</indent> </poetry> 17 <poetry>till I entered the sanctuary of God; <indent>then I understood their final destiny. </indent></poetry> 18 <poetry>Surely you place them on slippery ground; <indent>you cast them down to ruin. </indent> </poetry> 19 <poetry>How suddenly are they destroyed, <indent>completely swept away by terrors!</indent> </poetry> 20 <poetry>They are like a dream when one awakes; <indent>when you arise, Lord,</indent> <indent>you will despise them as fantasies. </indent></poetry> 21 <poetry>When my heart was grieved <indent>and my spirit embittered,</indent> </poetry> 22 <poetry>I was senseless and ignorant; <indent>I was a brute beast before you.</indent></poetry> 23 <poetry>Yet I am always with you; <indent>you hold me by my right hand. </indent> </poetry> 24 <poetry>You guide me with your counsel, <indent>and afterward you will take me into glory.</indent> </poetry> 25 <poetry>Whom have I in heaven but you? <indent>And earth has nothing I desire besides you. </indent> </poetry> 26 <poetry>My flesh and my heart may fail, <indent>but God is the strength of my heart</indent> <indent>and my portion forever.</indent></poetry> 27 <poetry>Those who are far from you will perish; <indent>you destroy all who are unfaithful to you.</indent> </poetry> 28 <poetry>But as for me, it is good to be near God. <indent>I have made the Sovereign <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> my refuge; </indent> <indent>I will tell of all your deeds. </indent></poetry>

Psalm 73:1

My flesh and my heart<cr>1</cr> may fail,<cr>2</cr> <indent>but God is the strength<cr>3</cr> of my heart</indent> <indent>and my portion<cr>4</cr> forever.</indent><pb/>

Those who are far from you will perish;<cr>1</cr> <indent>you destroy all who are unfaithful<cr>2</cr> to you.</indent>
