<h3>Psalm 78</h3><h3>A maskil of Asaph.</h3>78 <poetry>My people, hear my teaching; <indent>listen to the words of my mouth.</indent> </poetry> 2 <poetry>I will open my mouth with a parable; <indent>I will utter hidden things, things from of old—</indent> </poetry> 3 <poetry>things we have heard and known, <indent>things our ancestors have told us. </indent> </poetry> 4 <poetry>We will not hide them from their descendants; <indent>we will tell the next generation </indent> the praiseworthy deeds of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>his power, and the wonders he has done.</indent> </poetry> 5 <poetry>He decreed statutes for Jacob <indent>and established the law in Israel,</indent> which he commanded our ancestors <indent>to teach their children,</indent> </poetry> 6 <poetry>so the next generation would know them, <indent>even the children yet to be born, </indent> <indent>and they in turn would tell their children.</indent> </poetry> 7 <poetry>Then they would put their trust in God <indent>and would not forget his deeds</indent> <indent>but would keep his commands. </indent> </poetry> 8 <poetry>They would not be like their ancestors — <indent>a stubborn and rebellious generation,</indent> whose hearts were not loyal to God, <indent>whose spirits were not faithful to him.</indent></poetry> 9 <poetry>The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, <indent>turned back on the day of battle; </indent> </poetry> 10 <poetry>they did not keep God’s covenant <indent>and refused to live by his law. </indent> </poetry> 11 <poetry>They forgot what he had done, <indent>the wonders he had shown them.</indent> </poetry> 12 <poetry>He did miracles in the sight of their ancestors <indent>in the land of Egypt, in the region of Zoan. </indent> </poetry> 13 <poetry>He divided the sea and led them through; <indent>he made the water stand up like a wall. </indent> </poetry> 14 <poetry>He guided them with the cloud by day <indent>and with light from the fire all night. </indent> </poetry> 15 <poetry>He split the rocks in the wilderness <indent>and gave them water as abundant as the seas;</indent> </poetry> 16 <poetry>he brought streams out of a rocky crag <indent>and made water flow down like rivers.</indent></poetry> 17 <poetry>But they continued to sin against him, <indent>rebelling in the wilderness against the Most High.</indent> </poetry> 18 <poetry>They willfully put God to the test <indent>by demanding the food they craved. </indent> </poetry> 19 <poetry>They spoke against God; <indent>they said, “Can God really</indent> <indent>spread a table in the wilderness?</indent> </poetry> 20 <poetry>True, he struck the rock, <indent>and water gushed out, </indent> <indent>streams flowed abundantly,</indent> but can he also give us bread? <indent>Can he supply meat for his people?”</indent> </poetry> 21 <poetry>When the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> heard them, he was furious; <indent>his fire broke out against Jacob,</indent> <indent>and his wrath rose against Israel,</indent> </poetry> 22 <poetry>for they did not believe in God <indent>or trust in his deliverance.</indent> </poetry> 23 <poetry>Yet he gave a command to the skies above <indent>and opened the doors of the heavens; </indent> </poetry> 24 <poetry>he rained down manna for the people to eat, <indent>he gave them the grain of heaven.</indent> </poetry> 25 <poetry>Human beings ate the bread of angels; <indent>he sent them all the food they could eat.</indent> </poetry> 26 <poetry>He let loose the east wind from the heavens <indent>and by his power made the south wind blow.</indent> </poetry> 27 <poetry>He rained meat down on them like dust, <indent>birds like sand on the seashore.</indent> </poetry> 28 <poetry>He made them come down inside their camp, <indent>all around their tents.</indent> </poetry> 29 <poetry>They ate till they were gorged— <indent>he had given them what they craved.</indent> </poetry> 30 <poetry>But before they turned from what they craved, <indent>even while the food was still in their mouths, </indent> </poetry> 31 <poetry>God’s anger rose against them; <indent>they eagerly turned to him again.</indent> </poetry> 35 <poetry>They remembered that God was their Rock, <indent>that God Most High was their Redeemer. </indent> </poetry> 36 <poetry>But then they would flatter him with their mouths, <indent>lying to him with their tongues;</indent> </poetry> 37 <poetry>their hearts were not loyal to him, <indent>they were not faithful to his covenant.</indent> </poetry> 38 <poetry>Yet he was merciful; <indent>he forgave their iniquities </indent> <indent>and did not destroy them.</indent> Time after time he restrained his anger <indent>and did not stir up his full wrath.</indent> </poetry> 39 <poetry>He remembered that they were but flesh, <indent>a passing breeze that does not return.</indent></poetry> 40 <poetry>How often they rebelled against him in the wilderness <indent>and grieved him in the wasteland!</indent> </poetry> 41 <poetry>Again and again they put God to the test; <indent>they vexed the Holy One of Israel. </indent> </poetry> 42 <poetry>They did not remember his power— <indent>the day he redeemed them from the oppressor, </indent> </poetry> 43 <poetry>the day he displayed his signs in Egypt, <indent>his wonders in the region of Zoan.</indent> </poetry> 44 <poetry>He turned their river into blood; <indent>he was furious with his inheritance. </indent> </poetry> 63 <poetry>Fire consumed their young men, <indent>and their young women had no wedding songs; </indent> </poetry> 64 <poetry>their priests were put to the sword, <indent>and their widows could not weep.</indent></poetry> 65 <poetry>Then the Lord awoke as from sleep, <indent>as a warrior wakes from the stupor of wine.</indent> </poetry> 66 <poetry>He beat back his enemies; <indent>he put them to everlasting shame. </indent> </poetry> 67 <poetry>Then he rejected the tents of Joseph, <indent>he did not choose the tribe of Ephraim; </indent> </poetry> 68 <poetry>but he chose the tribe of Judah, <indent>Mount Zion, which he loved.</indent> </poetry> 69 <poetry>He built his sanctuary like the heights, <indent>like the earth that he established forever.</indent> </poetry> 70 <poetry>He chose David his servant <indent>and took him from the sheep pens;</indent> </poetry> 71 <poetry>from tending the sheep he brought him <indent>to be the shepherd of his people Jacob,</indent> <indent>of Israel his inheritance.</indent> </poetry> 72 <poetry>And David shepherded them with integrity of heart; <indent>with skillful hands he led them.</indent></poetry>
