Isaiah 40:1

Comfort, comfort<cr>1</cr> my people, <indent>says your God.</indent>

Speak tenderly<cr>1</cr> to Jerusalem, <indent>and proclaim to her</indent> that her hard service<cr>2</cr> has been completed,<cr>3</cr> <indent>that her sin has been paid for,<cr>4</cr> </indent> that she has received from the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>’s hand <indent>double<cr>5</cr> for all her sins.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 40:2

A voice of one calling: “In the wilderness prepare <indent>the way<cr>1</cr> for the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap><ft>1</ft>;</indent> make straight<cr>2</cr> in the desert <indent>a highway for our God.<ft>2</ft><cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:3

Every valley shall be raised up,<cr>1</cr> <indent>every mountain and hill<cr>2</cr> made low;</indent> the rough ground shall become level,<cr>3</cr> <indent>the rugged places a plain.</indent>

Isaiah 40:4

And the glory<cr>1</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will be revealed, <indent>and all people will see it together.<cr>2</cr> </indent> For the mouth of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> has spoken.”<cr>3</cr> <pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 40:5

Isaiah 40:9

See, the Sovereign <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> comes<cr>1</cr> with power,<cr>2</cr> <indent>and he rules<cr>3</cr> with a mighty arm.<cr>4</cr> </indent> See, his reward<cr>5</cr> is with him, <indent>and his recompense accompanies him.</indent>

Isaiah 40:11

Who has measured the waters<cr>1</cr> in the hollow of his hand,<cr>2</cr> <indent>or with the breadth of his hand marked off the heavens?<cr>3</cr> </indent> Who has held the dust of the earth in a basket, <indent>or weighed the mountains on the scales</indent> <indent>and the hills in a balance?<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:12

Who can fathom the Spirit<ft>1</ft><cr>1</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>or instruct the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> as his counselor?<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:13

Whom did the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> consult to enlighten him, <indent>and who taught him the right way?</indent> Who was it that taught him knowledge,<cr>1</cr> <indent>or showed him the path of understanding?<cr>2</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 40:14

Surely the nations are like a drop in a bucket; <indent>they are regarded as dust on the scales;<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>he weighs the islands as though they were fine dust.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:15

Lebanon<cr>1</cr> is not sufficient for altar fires, <indent>nor its animals<cr>2</cr> enough for burnt offerings.</indent>

Isaiah 40:16

Before him all the nations<cr>1</cr> are as nothing;<cr>2</cr> <indent>they are regarded by him as worthless</indent> <indent>and less than nothing.<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 40:17

With whom, then, will you compare God?<cr>1</cr> <indent>To what image<cr>2</cr> will you liken him?</indent>

Isaiah 40:18

As for an idol,<cr>1</cr> a metalworker casts it, <indent>and a goldsmith<cr>2</cr> overlays it with gold<cr>3</cr> </indent> <indent>and fashions silver chains for it.</indent>

Isaiah 40:19

A person too poor to present such an offering <indent>selects wood<cr>1</cr> that will not rot;</indent> they look for a skilled worker <indent>to set up an idol<cr>2</cr> that will not topple.<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 40:20

Do you not know? <indent>Have you not heard?<cr>1</cr> </indent> Has it not been told<cr>2</cr> you from the beginning?<cr>3</cr> <indent>Have you not understood<cr>4</cr> since the earth was founded?<cr>5</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:21

He sits enthroned<cr>1</cr> above the circle of the earth, <indent>and its people are like grasshoppers.<cr>2</cr> </indent> He stretches out the heavens<cr>3</cr> like a canopy,<cr>4</cr> <indent>and spreads them out like a tent<cr>5</cr> to live in.<cr>6</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:22

He brings princes<cr>1</cr> to naught <indent>and reduces the rulers of this world to nothing.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:23

No sooner are they planted, <indent>no sooner are they sown,</indent> <indent>no sooner do they take root<cr>1</cr> in the ground,</indent> than he blows<cr>2</cr> on them and they wither,<cr>3</cr> <indent>and a whirlwind sweeps them away like chaff.<cr>4</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 40:24

“To whom will you compare me?<cr>1</cr> <indent>Or who is my equal?” says the Holy One.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:25

Lift up your eyes and look to the heavens:<cr>1</cr> <indent>Who created<cr>2</cr> all these?</indent> He who brings out the starry host<cr>3</cr> one by one <indent>and calls forth each of them by name.</indent> Because of his great power and mighty strength,<cr>4</cr> <indent>not one of them is missing.<cr>5</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 40:26

Why do you complain, Jacob? <indent>Why do you say, Israel,</indent> “My way is hidden from the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>; <indent>my cause is disregarded by my God”?<cr>1</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:27

Do you not know? <indent>Have you not heard?<cr>1</cr> </indent> The <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> is the everlasting<cr>2</cr> God, <indent>the Creator<cr>3</cr> of the ends of the earth.<cr>4</cr> </indent> He will not grow tired or weary,<cr>5</cr> <indent>and his understanding no one can fathom.<cr>6</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:28

He gives strength<cr>1</cr> to the weary<cr>2</cr> <indent>and increases the power of the weak.</indent>

Isaiah 40:29

Even youths grow tired and weary, <indent>and young men<cr>1</cr> stumble and fall;<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 40:30

but those who hope<cr>1</cr> in the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> <indent>will renew their strength.<cr>2</cr> </indent> They will soar on wings like eagles;<cr>3</cr> <indent>they will run and not grow weary,</indent> <indent>they will walk and not be faint.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:1

“Be silent<cr>1</cr> before me, you islands!<cr>2</cr> <indent>Let the nations renew their strength!<cr>3</cr> </indent> Let them come forward<cr>4</cr> and speak; <indent>let us meet together<cr>5</cr> at the place of judgment.</indent><pb/><poetry>

“Who has stirred<cr>1</cr> up one from the east,<cr>2</cr> <indent>calling him in righteousness<cr>3</cr> to his service<ft>1</ft>?<cr>4</cr> </indent> He hands nations over to him <indent>and subdues kings before him.</indent> He turns them to dust<cr>5</cr> with his sword, <indent>to windblown chaff<cr>6</cr> with his bow.<cr>7</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:2

He pursues them and moves on unscathed,<cr>1</cr> <indent>by a path his feet have not traveled before.</indent>

Isaiah 41:3

Who has done this and carried it through, <indent>calling<cr>1</cr> forth the generations from the beginning?<cr>2</cr> </indent> I, the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>—with the first of them <indent>and with the last<cr>3</cr> —I am he.<cr>4</cr> ”</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 41:4

The islands<cr>1</cr> have seen it and fear; <indent>the ends of the earth<cr>2</cr> tremble.</indent> They approach and come forward;

they help each other</indent> <indent>and say to their companions, “Be strong!<cr>1</cr> ”</indent>

Isaiah 41:6

The metalworker<cr>1</cr> encourages the goldsmith,<cr>2</cr> <indent>and the one who smooths with the hammer</indent> <indent>spurs on the one who strikes the anvil.</indent> One says of the welding, “It is good.” <indent>The other nails down the idol so it will not topple.<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 41:7

“But you, Israel, my servant,<cr>1</cr> <indent>Jacob, whom I have chosen,<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>you descendants of Abraham<cr>3</cr> my friend,<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:8

I took you from the ends of the earth,<cr>1</cr> <indent>from its farthest corners I called<cr>2</cr> you.</indent> I said, ‘You are my servant’;<cr>3</cr> <indent>I have chosen<cr>4</cr> you and have not rejected you.</indent>

Isaiah 41:9

So do not fear,<cr>1</cr> for I am with you;<cr>2</cr> <indent>do not be dismayed, for I am your God.</indent> I will strengthen<cr>3</cr> you and help<cr>4</cr> you; <indent>I will uphold you<cr>5</cr> with my righteous right hand.<cr>6</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 41:10

“All who rage<cr>1</cr> against you <indent>will surely be ashamed and disgraced;<cr>2</cr> </indent> those who oppose<cr>3</cr> you <indent>will be as nothing and perish.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:11

Though you search for your enemies, <indent>you will not find them.<cr>1</cr> </indent> Those who wage war against you <indent>will be as nothing<cr>2</cr> at all.</indent>

Isaiah 41:12

For I am the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> your God <indent>who takes hold of your right hand<cr>1</cr> </indent> and says to you, Do not fear; <indent>I will help<cr>2</cr> you.</indent>

Isaiah 41:13

Do not be afraid,<cr>1</cr> you worm<cr>2</cr> Jacob, <indent>little Israel, do not fear,</indent> for I myself will help<cr>3</cr> you,” declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>your Redeemer,<cr>4</cr> the Holy One<cr>5</cr> of Israel.</indent>

Isaiah 41:14

“See, I will make you into a threshing sledge,<cr>1</cr> <indent>new and sharp, with many teeth.</indent> You will thresh the mountains<cr>2</cr> and crush them, <indent>and reduce the hills to chaff.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:15

You will winnow<cr>1</cr> them, the wind will pick them up, <indent>and a gale<cr>2</cr> will blow them away.<cr>3</cr> </indent> But you will rejoice<cr>4</cr> in the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> <indent>and glory<cr>5</cr> in the Holy One<cr>6</cr> of Israel.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 41:16

“The poor and needy search for water,<cr>1</cr> <indent>but there is none;</indent> <indent>their tongues are parched with thirst.<cr>2</cr> </indent> But I the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will answer<cr>3</cr> them; <indent>I, the God of Israel, will not forsake<cr>4</cr> them.</indent>

Isaiah 41:17

I will make rivers flow<cr>1</cr> on barren heights, <indent>and springs within the valleys.</indent> I will turn the desert<cr>2</cr> into pools of water,<cr>3</cr> <indent>and the parched ground into springs.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:18

I will put in the desert<cr>1</cr> <indent>the cedar and the acacia,<cr>2</cr> the myrtle and the olive.</indent> I will set junipers<cr>3</cr> in the wasteland, <indent>the fir and the cypress<cr>4</cr> together,<cr>5</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:19

so that people may see and know,<cr>1</cr> <indent>may consider and understand,<cr>2</cr> </indent> that the hand<cr>3</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> has done this, <indent>that the Holy One<cr>4</cr> of Israel has created<cr>5</cr> it.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 41:20

“Present your case,<cr>1</cr> ” says the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>. <indent>“Set forth your arguments,” says Jacob’s King.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:21

“Tell us, you idols, <indent>what is going to happen.<cr>1</cr> </indent> Tell us what the former things<cr>2</cr> were, <indent>so that we may consider them</indent> <indent>and know their final outcome.</indent> Or declare to us the things to come,<cr>3</cr>

Isaiah 41:22

tell us what the future holds,</indent> <indent>so we may know<cr>1</cr> that you are gods.</indent> Do something, whether good or bad,<cr>2</cr> <indent>so that we will be dismayed<cr>3</cr> and filled with fear.</indent>

Isaiah 41:23

But you are less than nothing<cr>1</cr> <indent>and your works are utterly worthless;<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>whoever chooses you is detestable.<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 41:24

“I have stirred<cr>1</cr> up one from the north,<cr>2</cr> and he comes— <indent>one from the rising sun who calls on my name.</indent> He treads<cr>3</cr> on rulers as if they were mortar, <indent>as if he were a potter treading the clay.</indent>

Isaiah 41:25

Who told of this from the beginning,<cr>1</cr> so we could know, <indent>or beforehand, so we could say, ‘He was right’?</indent> No one told of this, <indent>no one foretold<cr>2</cr> it,</indent> <indent>no one heard any words<cr>3</cr> from you.</indent>

Isaiah 41:26

I was the first to tell<cr>1</cr> Zion, ‘Look, here they are!’ <indent>I gave to Jerusalem a messenger of good news.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 41:27

I look but there is no one<cr>1</cr> — <indent>no one among the gods to give counsel,<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>no one to give answer<cr>3</cr> when I ask them.</indent>

Isaiah 41:28

See, they are all false! <indent>Their deeds amount to nothing;<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>their images<cr>2</cr> are but wind<cr>3</cr> and confusion.</indent>

Isaiah 42:1

“Here is my servant,<cr>1</cr> whom I uphold, <indent>my chosen one<cr>2</cr> in whom I delight;<cr>3</cr> </indent> I will put my Spirit<cr>4</cr> on him, <indent>and he will bring justice<cr>5</cr> to the nations.<cr>6</cr> </indent>

He will not shout or cry out,<cr>1</cr> <indent>or raise his voice in the streets.</indent>

Isaiah 42:2

A bruised reed<cr>1</cr> he will not break,<cr>2</cr> <indent>and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out.<cr>3</cr> </indent> In faithfulness he will bring forth justice;<cr>4</cr>

he will not falter or be discouraged</indent> till he establishes justice<cr>1</cr> on earth. <indent>In his teaching<cr>2</cr> the islands<cr>3</cr> will put their hope.”<cr>4</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 42:5

Isaiah 42:12

The <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> will march out like a champion,<cr>1</cr> <indent>like a warrior<cr>2</cr> he will stir up his zeal;<cr>3</cr> </indent> with a shout<cr>4</cr> he will raise the battle cry <indent>and will triumph over his enemies.<cr>5</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 42:13

“For a long time I have kept silent,<cr>1</cr> <indent>I have been quiet and held myself back.<cr>2</cr> </indent> But now, like a woman in childbirth, <indent>I cry out, I gasp and pant.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 42:14

I will lay waste<cr>1</cr> the mountains<cr>2</cr> and hills <indent>and dry up all their vegetation;</indent> I will turn rivers into islands <indent>and dry up<cr>3</cr> the pools.</indent>

I will lead<cr>1</cr> the blind<cr>2</cr> by ways they have not known, <indent>along unfamiliar paths I will guide them;</indent> I will turn the darkness into light<cr>3</cr> before them <indent>and make the rough places smooth.<cr>4</cr> </indent> These are the things I will do; <indent>I will not forsake<cr>5</cr> them.</indent>

Isaiah 42:16

But those who trust in idols, <indent>who say to images, ‘You are our gods,’<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>will be turned back in utter shame.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

“Hear, you deaf;<cr>1</cr> <indent>look, you blind, and see!</indent>

Who is blind<cr>1</cr> but my servant,<cr>2</cr> <indent>and deaf like the messenger<cr>3</cr> I send?</indent> Who is blind like the one in covenant<cr>4</cr> with me, <indent>blind like the servant of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>?</indent>

Isaiah 42:19

You have seen many things, but you pay no attention; <indent>your ears are open, but you do not listen.”<cr>1</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 42:20

It pleased the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> <indent>for the sake<cr>1</cr> of his righteousness</indent> <indent>to make his law<cr>2</cr> great and glorious.</indent>

Isaiah 42:21

But this is a people plundered<cr>1</cr> and looted, <indent>all of them trapped in pits<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>or hidden away in prisons.<cr>3</cr> </indent> They have become plunder, <indent>with no one to rescue them;<cr>4</cr> </indent> they have been made loot, <indent>with no one to say, “Send them back.”</indent><pb/><poetry>

Isaiah 42:22

Which of you will listen to this <indent>or pay close attention<cr>1</cr> in time to come?</indent>

Isaiah 42:23

Who handed Jacob over to become loot, <indent>and Israel to the plunderers?<cr>1</cr> </indent> Was it not the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>,<cr>2</cr> <indent>against whom we have sinned?</indent> For they would not follow<cr>3</cr> his ways; <indent>they did not obey his law.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 42:24

So he poured out on them his burning anger,<cr>1</cr> <indent>the violence of war.</indent> It enveloped them in flames,<cr>2</cr> yet they did not understand;<cr>3</cr> <indent>it consumed them, but they did not take it to heart.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Isaiah 43:1

The NIV was published to meet the need for a modern translation done by Bible scholars using the earliest, highest quality manuscripts available. Of equal importance was that the Bible be expressed in broadly understood modern English.

The NIV is published by Zondervan in the United States and Hodder & Stoughton in the UK. The NIV was updated in 1984 and 2011 and has become one of the most popular and best-selling modern translations.
