Jeremiah 2:1

The word<cr>1</cr> of the Lord came to me:

“Go and proclaim in the hearing of Jerusalem:<pb/>“This is what the Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“‘I remember the devotion of your youth,<cr>1</cr> <indent>how as a bride you loved me</indent> and followed me through the wilderness,<cr>2</cr> <indent>through a land not sown.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:2

Israel was holy<cr>1</cr> to the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>,<cr>2</cr> <indent>the firstfruits<cr>3</cr> of his harvest;</indent> all who devoured<cr>4</cr> her were held guilty,<cr>5</cr> <indent>and disaster overtook them,’”</indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.<pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 2:3

Hear the word of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, you descendants of Jacob, <indent>all you clans of Israel.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:4

This is what the Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“What fault did your ancestors find in me, <indent>that they strayed so far from me?</indent> They followed worthless idols<cr>1</cr> <indent>and became worthless<cr>2</cr> themselves.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:5

They did not ask, ‘Where is the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>who brought us up out of Egypt<cr>1</cr> </indent> and led us through the barren wilderness, <indent>through a land of deserts<cr>2</cr> and ravines,<cr>3</cr> </indent> a land of drought and utter darkness, <indent>a land where no one travels<cr>4</cr> and no one lives?’</indent>

Jeremiah 2:6

I brought you into a fertile land <indent>to eat its fruit and rich produce.<cr>1</cr> </indent> But you came and defiled my land <indent>and made my inheritance detestable.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 2:7

The priests did not ask, <indent>‘Where is the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>?’</indent> Those who deal with the law did not know me;<cr>1</cr> <indent>the leaders<cr>2</cr> rebelled against me.</indent> The prophets prophesied by Baal,<cr>3</cr> <indent>following worthless idols.<cr>4</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 2:8

“Therefore I bring charges<cr>1</cr> against you again,” declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>. <indent>“And I will bring charges against your children’s children.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:9

Cross over to the coasts of Cyprus<cr>1</cr> and look, <indent>send to Kedar<ft>1</ft><cr>2</cr> and observe closely;</indent> <indent>see if there has ever been anything like this:</indent>

Jeremiah 2:10

Has a nation ever changed its gods? <indent>(Yet they are not gods<cr>1</cr> at all.)</indent> But my people have exchanged their glorious<cr>2</cr> God <indent>for worthless idols.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:11

Be appalled at this, you heavens, <indent>and shudder with great horror,”</indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.

Jeremiah 2:12

“My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken<cr>1</cr> me, <indent>the spring of living water,<cr>2</cr> </indent> and have dug their own cisterns, <indent>broken cisterns that cannot hold water.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:13

Is Israel a servant, a slave<cr>1</cr> by birth? <indent>Why then has he become plunder?</indent>

Jeremiah 2:14

Lions<cr>1</cr> have roared; <indent>they have growled at him.</indent> They have laid waste<cr>2</cr> his land; <indent>his towns are burned<cr>3</cr> and deserted.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 2:15

Also, the men of Memphis<cr>1</cr> and Tahpanhes<cr>2</cr> <indent>have cracked your skull.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:16

Have you not brought this on yourselves<cr>1</cr> <indent>by forsaking<cr>2</cr> the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> your God</indent> <indent>when he led you in the way?</indent>

Jeremiah 2:17

Now why go to Egypt<cr>1</cr> <indent>to drink water from the Nile<ft>1</ft>?<cr>2</cr> </indent> And why go to Assyria<cr>3</cr> <indent>to drink water from the Euphrates?<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 2:18

Your wickedness will punish you; <indent>your backsliding<cr>1</cr> will rebuke<cr>2</cr> you.</indent> Consider then and realize <indent>how evil and bitter<cr>3</cr> it is for you</indent> when you forsake<cr>4</cr> the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> your God <indent>and have no awe<cr>5</cr> of me,”</indent> declares the Lord, the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> Almighty.<pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 2:19

“Long ago you broke off your yoke<cr>1</cr> <indent>and tore off your bonds;<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>you said, ‘I will not serve you!’<cr>3</cr> </indent> Indeed, on every high hill<cr>4</cr> <indent>and under every spreading tree<cr>5</cr> </indent> <indent>you lay down as a prostitute.<cr>6</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 2:20

I had planted<cr>1</cr> you like a choice vine<cr>2</cr> <indent>of sound and reliable stock.</indent> How then did you turn against me <indent>into a corrupt,<cr>3</cr> wild vine?</indent>

Jeremiah 2:21

Although you wash<cr>1</cr> yourself with soap<cr>2</cr> <indent>and use an abundance of cleansing powder,</indent> <indent>the stain of your guilt is still before me,”</indent> declares the Sovereign <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.<cr>3</cr>

Jeremiah 2:22

“How can you say, ‘I am not defiled;<cr>1</cr> <indent>I have not run after the Baals’?<cr>2</cr> </indent> See how you behaved in the valley;<cr>3</cr> <indent>consider what you have done.</indent> You are a swift she-camel <indent>running<cr>4</cr> here and there,</indent>

Jeremiah 2:23

a wild donkey<cr>1</cr> accustomed to the desert,<cr>2</cr> <indent>sniffing the wind in her craving—</indent> <indent>in her heat who can restrain her?</indent> Any males that pursue her need not tire themselves; <indent>at mating time they will find her.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:24

Do not run until your feet are bare <indent>and your throat is dry.</indent> But you said, ‘It’s no use!<cr>1</cr> <indent>I love foreign gods,<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>and I must go after them.’<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 2:25

“As a thief is disgraced<cr>1</cr> when he is caught, <indent>so the people of Israel are disgraced—</indent> they, their kings and their officials, <indent>their priests<cr>2</cr> and their prophets.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 2:26

They say to wood,<cr>1</cr> ‘You are my father,’ <indent>and to stone,<cr>2</cr> ‘You gave me birth.’</indent> They have turned their backs<cr>3</cr> to me <indent>and not their faces;<cr>4</cr> </indent> yet when they are in trouble,<cr>5</cr> they say, <indent>‘Come and save<cr>6</cr> us!’</indent>

Jeremiah 2:27

Where then are the gods<cr>1</cr> you made for yourselves? <indent>Let them come if they can save you</indent> <indent>when you are in trouble!<cr>2</cr> </indent> For you, Judah, have as many gods <indent>as you have towns.<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 2:28

“Why do you bring charges against me? <indent>You have all<cr>1</cr> rebelled against me,”</indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.

Jeremiah 2:29

“In vain I punished your people; <indent>they did not respond to correction.<cr>1</cr> </indent> Your sword has devoured your prophets<cr>2</cr> <indent>like a ravenous lion.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:30

“You of this generation, consider the word of the Lord:<pb/><poetry>“Have I been a desert to Israel <indent>or a land of great darkness?<cr>1</cr> </indent> Why do my people say, ‘We are free to roam; <indent>we will come to you no more’?<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 2:31

Does a young woman forget her jewelry, <indent>a bride her wedding ornaments?</indent> Yet my people have forgotten<cr>1</cr> me, <indent>days without number.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:32

How skilled you are at pursuing<cr>1</cr> love! <indent>Even the worst of women can learn from your ways.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:33

On your clothes is found <indent>the lifeblood<cr>1</cr> of the innocent poor,</indent> <indent>though you did not catch them breaking in.<cr>2</cr> </indent> Yet in spite of all this

Jeremiah 2:34

you say, ‘I am innocent;<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>he is not angry with me.’</indent> But I will pass judgment<cr>2</cr> on you <indent>because you say, ‘I have not sinned.’<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 2:35

Why do you go about so much, <indent>changing<cr>1</cr> your ways?</indent> You will be disappointed by Egypt<cr>2</cr> <indent>as you were by Assyria.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:36

You will also leave that place <indent>with your hands on your head,<cr>1</cr> </indent> for the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> has rejected those you trust; <indent>you will not be helped<cr>2</cr> by them.</indent>

Jeremiah 2:37

“If a man divorces<cr>1</cr> his wife <indent>and she leaves him and marries another man,</indent> should he return to her again? <indent>Would not the land be completely defiled?<cr>2</cr> </indent> But you have lived as a prostitute with many lovers<cr>3</cr> — <indent>would you now return to me?”<cr>4</cr> </indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.

Jeremiah 3:1

“Look up to the barren heights<cr>1</cr> and see. <indent>Is there any place where you have not been ravished?</indent> By the roadside<cr>2</cr> you sat waiting for lovers, <indent>sat like a nomad in the desert.</indent> You have defiled the land<cr>3</cr> <indent>with your prostitution<cr>4</cr> and wickedness.</indent>

Jeremiah 3:2

Therefore the showers have been withheld,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and no spring rains<cr>2</cr> have fallen.</indent> Yet you have the brazen<cr>3</cr> look of a prostitute; <indent>you refuse to blush with shame.<cr>4</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 3:3

Have you not just called to me: <indent>‘My Father,<cr>1</cr> my friend from my youth,<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 3:4

will you always be angry?<cr>1</cr> <indent>Will your wrath continue forever?’</indent> This is how you talk, <indent>but you do all the evil you can.”</indent>

Jeremiah 3:5

Jeremiah 3:6

During the reign of King Josiah,<cr>1</cr> the Lord said to me, “Have you seen what faithless<cr>2</cr> Israel has done? She has gone up on every high hill and under every spreading tree<cr>3</cr> and has committed adultery<cr>4</cr> there.

I thought that after she had done all this she would return to me but she did not, and her unfaithful sister<cr>1</cr> Judah saw it.<cr>2</cr>

Jeremiah 3:7

I gave faithless Israel<cr>1</cr> her certificate of divorce<cr>2</cr> and sent her away because of all her adulteries. Yet I saw that her unfaithful sister Judah had no fear;<cr>3</cr> she also went out and committed adultery.

Jeremiah 3:8

Because Israel’s immorality mattered so little to her, she defiled the land<cr>1</cr> and committed adultery<cr>2</cr> with stone<cr>3</cr> and wood.<cr>4</cr>

Jeremiah 3:9

In spite of all this, her unfaithful sister Judah did not return<cr>1</cr> to me with all her heart, but only in pretense,<cr>2</cr> ” declares the Lord.<cr>3</cr>

Jeremiah 3:10

The Lord said to me, “Faithless Israel is more righteous<cr>1</cr> than unfaithful<cr>2</cr> Judah.<cr>3</cr>

Jeremiah 3:11

Go, proclaim this message toward the north:<cr>1</cr> <pb/><poetry>“‘Return,<cr>2</cr> faithless<cr>3</cr> Israel,’ declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>‘I will frown on you no longer,</indent> for I am faithful,’<cr>4</cr> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>‘I will not be angry<cr>5</cr> forever.</indent>

Jeremiah 3:12

Only acknowledge<cr>1</cr> your guilt— <indent>you have rebelled against the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> your God,</indent> you have scattered your favors to foreign gods<cr>2</cr> <indent>under every spreading tree,<cr>3</cr> </indent> <indent>and have not obeyed<cr>4</cr> me,’”</indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.

Jeremiah 3:13

“Return,<cr>1</cr> faithless people,” declares the Lord, “for I am your husband.<cr>2</cr> I will choose you—one from a town and two from a clan—and bring you to Zion.

Jeremiah 3:14

Then I will give you shepherds<cr>1</cr> after my own heart,<cr>2</cr> who will lead you with knowledge and understanding.

Jeremiah 3:15

In those days, when your numbers have increased greatly in the land,” declares the Lord, “people will no longer say, ‘The ark<cr>1</cr> of the covenant of the Lord.’ It will never enter their minds or be remembered;<cr>2</cr> it will not be missed, nor will another one be made.

Jeremiah 3:16

At that time they will call Jerusalem The Throne<cr>1</cr> of the Lord, and all nations<cr>2</cr> will gather in Jerusalem to honor<cr>3</cr> the name of the Lord. No longer will they follow the stubbornness of their evil hearts.<cr>4</cr>

Jeremiah 3:17

In those days the people of Judah will join the people of Israel,<cr>1</cr> and together<cr>2</cr> they will come from a northern<cr>3</cr> land to the land<cr>4</cr> I gave your ancestors as an inheritance.

Jeremiah 3:18

“I myself said,<pb/><poetry>“‘How gladly would I treat you like my children <indent>and give you a pleasant land,<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>the most beautiful inheritance<cr>2</cr> of any nation.’</indent> I thought you would call me ‘Father’<cr>3</cr> <indent>and not turn away from following me.</indent>

Jeremiah 3:19

But like a woman unfaithful to her husband, <indent>so you, Israel, have been unfaithful<cr>1</cr> to me,”</indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.<pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 3:20

A cry is heard on the barren heights,<cr>1</cr> <indent>the weeping<cr>2</cr> and pleading of the people of Israel,</indent> because they have perverted their ways <indent>and have forgotten<cr>3</cr> the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> their God.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 3:21

“Return,<cr>1</cr> faithless people; <indent>I will cure<cr>2</cr> you of backsliding.”<cr>3</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>“Yes, we will come to you, <indent>for you are the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> our God.</indent>

Jeremiah 3:22

Surely the idolatrous commotion on the hills<cr>1</cr> <indent>and mountains is a deception;</indent> surely in the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> our God <indent>is the salvation<cr>2</cr> of Israel.</indent>

Jeremiah 3:23

From our youth shameful<cr>1</cr> gods have consumed <indent>the fruits of our ancestors’ labor—</indent> their flocks and herds, <indent>their sons and daughters.</indent>

Jeremiah 3:24

Let us lie down in our shame,<cr>1</cr> <indent>and let our disgrace cover us.</indent> We have sinned<cr>2</cr> against the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> our God, <indent>both we and our ancestors;<cr>3</cr> </indent> from our youth<cr>4</cr> till this day <indent>we have not obeyed<cr>5</cr> the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> our God.”</indent>

Jeremiah 3:25

“If you, Israel, will return,<cr>1</cr> <indent>then return to me,”</indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>. “If you put your detestable idols<cr>2</cr> out of my sight <indent>and no longer go astray,</indent>

Jeremiah 4:1

and if in a truthful, just and righteous way <indent>you swear,<cr>1</cr> ‘As surely as the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> lives,’<cr>2</cr> </indent> then the nations will invoke blessings<cr>3</cr> by him <indent>and in him they will boast.<cr>4</cr> ”</indent>

Jeremiah 4:2

This is what the Lord says to the people of Judah and to Jerusalem:<pb/><poetry>“Break up your unplowed ground<cr>1</cr> <indent>and do not sow among thorns.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:3

Circumcise yourselves to the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>circumcise your hearts,<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>you people of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem,</indent> or my wrath<cr>2</cr> will flare up and burn like fire<cr>3</cr> <indent>because of the evil<cr>4</cr> you have done—</indent> <indent>burn with no one to quench<cr>5</cr> it.</indent>

Jeremiah 4:4

Jeremiah 4:5

“Announce in Judah and proclaim<cr>1</cr> in Jerusalem and say: <indent>‘Sound the trumpet<cr>2</cr> throughout the land!’</indent> Cry aloud and say: <indent>‘Gather together!</indent> <indent>Let us flee to the fortified cities!’<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Raise the signal<cr>1</cr> to go to Zion! <indent>Flee for safety without delay!</indent> For I am bringing disaster<cr>2</cr> from the north,<cr>3</cr> <indent>even terrible destruction.”</indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:6

A lion<cr>1</cr> has come out of his lair;<cr>2</cr> <indent>a destroyer<cr>3</cr> of nations has set out.</indent> He has left his place <indent>to lay waste<cr>4</cr> your land.</indent> Your towns will lie in ruins<cr>5</cr> <indent>without inhabitant.</indent>

Jeremiah 4:7

So put on sackcloth,<cr>1</cr> <indent>lament<cr>2</cr> and wail,</indent> for the fierce anger<cr>3</cr> of the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> <indent>has not turned away from us.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:8

“In that day,” declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, <indent>“the king and the officials will lose heart,<cr>1</cr> </indent> the priests will be horrified, <indent>and the prophets will be appalled.”<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:9

Then I said, “Alas, Sovereign Lord! How completely you have deceived<cr>1</cr> this people and Jerusalem by saying, ‘You will have peace,’<cr>2</cr> when the sword is at our throats!”

Jeremiah 4:10

At that time this people and Jerusalem will be told, “A scorching wind<cr>1</cr> from the barren heights in the desert blows toward my people, but not to winnow or cleanse;

Jeremiah 4:11

a wind<cr>1</cr> too strong for that comes from me. Now I pronounce my judgments<cr>2</cr> against them.”<pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:12

Look! He advances like the clouds,<cr>1</cr> <indent>his chariots<cr>2</cr> come like a whirlwind,<cr>3</cr> </indent> his horses<cr>4</cr> are swifter than eagles.<cr>5</cr> <indent>Woe to us! We are ruined!<cr>6</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:13

Jerusalem, wash<cr>1</cr> the evil from your heart and be saved.<cr>2</cr> <indent>How long<cr>3</cr> will you harbor wicked thoughts?</indent>

Jeremiah 4:14

A voice is announcing from Dan,<cr>1</cr> <indent>proclaiming disaster from the hills of Ephraim.<cr>2</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:15

“Tell this to the nations, <indent>proclaim concerning Jerusalem:</indent> ‘A besieging army is coming from a distant land,<cr>1</cr> <indent>raising a war cry<cr>2</cr> against the cities of Judah.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:16

They surround<cr>1</cr> her like men guarding a field, <indent>because she has rebelled<cr>2</cr> against me,’”</indent> declares the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>.

Jeremiah 4:17

“Your own conduct and actions<cr>1</cr> <indent>have brought this on you.<cr>2</cr> </indent> This is your punishment. <indent>How bitter<cr>3</cr> it is!</indent> <indent>How it pierces to the heart!”</indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:18

Oh, my anguish, my anguish!<cr>1</cr> <indent>I writhe in pain.<cr>2</cr> </indent> Oh, the agony of my heart! <indent>My heart pounds<cr>3</cr> within me,</indent> <indent>I cannot keep silent.<cr>4</cr> </indent> For I have heard the sound of the trumpet;<cr>5</cr> <indent>I have heard the battle cry.<cr>6</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:19

Disaster follows disaster;<cr>1</cr> <indent>the whole land lies in ruins.<cr>2</cr> </indent> In an instant my tents<cr>3</cr> are destroyed, <indent>my shelter in a moment.</indent>

Jeremiah 4:20

How long must I see the battle standard<cr>1</cr> <indent>and hear the sound of the trumpet?<cr>2</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:21

“My people are fools;<cr>1</cr> <indent>they do not know me.<cr>2</cr> </indent> They are senseless children; <indent>they have no understanding.<cr>3</cr> </indent> They are skilled in doing evil;<cr>4</cr> <indent>they know not how to do good.”<cr>5</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:22

I looked at the earth, <indent>and it was formless and empty;<cr>1</cr> </indent> and at the heavens, <indent>and their light<cr>2</cr> was gone.</indent>

Jeremiah 4:23

I looked at the mountains, <indent>and they were quaking;<cr>1</cr> </indent> <indent>all the hills were swaying.</indent>

Jeremiah 4:24

I looked, and there were no people; <indent>every bird in the sky had flown away.<cr>1</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:25

I looked, and the fruitful land was a desert;<cr>1</cr> <indent>all its towns lay in ruins<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>before the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap>, before his fierce anger.<cr>3</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:26

This is what the Lord says:<pb/><poetry>“The whole land will be ruined,<cr>1</cr> <indent>though I will not destroy<cr>2</cr> it completely.</indent>

Jeremiah 4:27

Therefore the earth will mourn<cr>1</cr> <indent>and the heavens above grow dark,<cr>2</cr> </indent> because I have spoken and will not relent,<cr>3</cr> <indent>I have decided and will not turn back.<cr>4</cr> ”</indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:28

At the sound of horsemen and archers<cr>1</cr> <indent>every town takes to flight.<cr>2</cr> </indent> Some go into the thickets; <indent>some climb up among the rocks.<cr>3</cr> </indent> All the towns are deserted;<cr>4</cr> <indent>no one lives in them.</indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:29

What are you doing,<cr>1</cr> you devastated one? <indent>Why dress yourself in scarlet</indent> <indent>and put on jewels<cr>2</cr> of gold?</indent> Why highlight your eyes with makeup?<cr>3</cr> <indent>You adorn yourself in vain.</indent> Your lovers<cr>4</cr> despise you; <indent>they want to kill you.<cr>5</cr> </indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 4:30

I hear a cry as of a woman in labor,<cr>1</cr> <indent>a groan as of one bearing her first child—</indent> the cry of Daughter Zion<cr>2</cr> gasping for breath,<cr>3</cr> <indent>stretching out her hands<cr>4</cr> and saying,</indent> “Alas! I am fainting; <indent>my life is given over to murderers.”<cr>5</cr> </indent>

Jeremiah 4:31

Jeremiah 5:1

“Go up and down<cr>1</cr> the streets of Jerusalem, <indent>look around and consider,<cr>2</cr> </indent> <indent>search through her squares.</indent> If you can find but one person<cr>3</cr> <indent>who deals honestly<cr>4</cr> and seeks the truth,</indent> <indent>I will forgive<cr>5</cr> this city.</indent>

Although they say, ‘As surely as the <smallCap>Lord</smallCap> lives,’<cr>1</cr> <indent>still they are swearing falsely.<cr>2</cr> ”</indent><pb/><poetry>

Jeremiah 5:2

The New International Version (NIV) is an English translation of the Bible first published in 1978 by Biblica (formerly the International Bible Society). The NIV was published to meet the need for a modern translation done by Bible scholars using the earliest, highest quality manuscripts available. Of equal importance was that the Bible be expressed in broadly understood modern English.

The NIV is published by Zondervan in the United States and Hodder & Stoughton in the UK. The NIV was updated in 1984 and 2011 and has become one of the most popular and best-selling modern translations.
