A Gift or an Inheritance

A Gift or an Inheritance

by Robert B. Thompson
So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs. (Hebrews 1:4)
The present essay is about the difference between a gift and an inheritance.
The following is an example of this difference:
Abraham left everything he owned to Isaac. But while he was still living, he gave gifts to the sons of his concubines and sent them away from his son Isaac to the land of the east. (Genesis 25:5,6)
After Sarah died, Abraham had six sons by Keturah. But neither Keturah nor the six sons were included in the genealogy of the Lord Jesus.
Abraham gave gifts to his six sons. But they were not part of Abraham's inheritance. It was Isaac who inherited the name and blessings of Abraham. Right here we see the difference between a Divine gift and a Divine inheritance.
The believers who live a victorious life in Christ will inherit all that God is making new. They are not just given these things, they inherit them.
He who overcomes will inherit these things, and I will be his God and he will be My son. (Revelation 21:7—NASB)
What is the difference?
The difference is in whether we want God or the things of God.
