Sermon Bible Commentary - Hosea 8:14

Hosea 8:14 I. Consider the statements of the text in their primary reference to Israel and Judah, showing their application in spirit to ourselves. (1) Those whom God originally called to be one, whom He consolidated into a Church, making them His family and people, are now two; they are split and divided into contending factions. (2) Notice the different conduct by which the two parties in the text were distinguished. Israel builds temples. Judah multiplies fenced cities. Israel fell from and... read more

Chapter 8Set the trumpet to thy mouth. He shall come as an eagle against the house of the LORD, because they have transgressed my covenant, and trespassed against my law ( Hsa Hosea 8:1 ).So God again is giving His indictment against them. Number one, they have trespassed His covenant. Number two, they transgressed His law. God had established a covenant with the nation Israel. The covenant was the basis whereby God would be their God and would bless them. "Now if you do these things, I will be... read more

Sutcliffe's Commentary on the Old and New Testaments - Hosea 8:1-14

Hosea 8:1 . Set the trumpet to thy mouth. Give alarm, for the king of Assyria is coming; he is stretching his wings like an eagle to take the prey. Isaiah uses the same figure, in Isaiah 58:1. Against the house of the Lord, the temple in Jerusalem. After Samaria shall have fallen under his power, then Judea shall fall, because she also has utterly transgressed the covenant by idols. Hosea 8:4 . They have set up kings, but not by me, This refers to the later kings of the ten tribes,... read more

Hosea 8:14For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities.Neither the religion nor security of a nation to be judged by appearancesThe temples are the idolatrous temples built after the models from Syrophoenicia. Fenced cities are fortified places erected against foreign invaders.1. The multiplicity of temples is no infallible proof of the growth of religion in a country. When we think of the moral causes that often lead to the erection of... read more

Hos 8:14 For Israel hath forgotten his Maker, and buildeth temples; and Judah hath multiplied fenced cities: but I will send a fire upon his cities, and it shall devour the palaces thereof. Ver. 14. For Israel hath forgotten his maker ] Not more his factor than his benefactor, as, 1 Samuel 12:6 , the Lord made Moses and Aaron, i.e. he advanced them to that honour in his Church. So our Saviour is said to have made twelve, when he ordained them to the apostleship, Mark 3:14 . And the apostle... read more

ISRAEL’S POLITICAL AND RELIGIOUS PRACTICES; AN ABOMINATION TO JEHOVAH, Hosea 8:4-14. In Hosea 8:4 the prophet renews his attack upon Israel. The political revolutions are rebellion against Jehovah (Hosea 8:4); their idolatry is an abomination to him (Hosea 8:4-6); they must reap what they have sown (Hosea 8:7); their appeals to foreign nations will not save them (Hosea 8:8-10). Once more he condemns their religious practices, and the section closes with a threat of judgment (Hosea 8:11-14). read more

6. From Israel was it also [“is even this”] What? Evidently the calf of Hosea 8:5. In its establishment Jehovah had no part; it is the work of Israel; therefore the former has cast it off. To join this clause more closely with 5a, 5b is transposed by some so as to stand before Hosea 8:5; Hosea 8:5 c is explained as a later gloss. Since the idol is made by human hands it can be no God (R.V.) These words imply that the people identify the image with the deity. To show its impotence it will... read more
