Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Job 12:13

GOD'S WISDOM AND POWER CONTRASTED WITH THAT OF MEN"With God is wisdom and might; He hath counsel and understanding.Behold, he breaketh down, and it cannot be built again; He shutteth up a man, and there can be no opening.Behold, he withholdeth the waters, and they dry up;Again he sendeth them out, and they overturn the earth. With him is strength and wisdom; The deceived and the deceiver are his.He leadeth counselors away stripped,And judges maketh he fools. He looseth the bond of kings,And bindeth... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Job 12:9

Job 12:9. Who knoweth not, &c.?— Who knoweth not among all these, that it is the hand of Jehovah which hath made them all? From the word Jehovah's being used in this place, some would infer that the book of Job must be at least posterior to the time of Moses, and written by a Jew: a very weak argument! as there seems no doubt that the name Jehovah was well known to Abraham and the patriarchs; nor was it made known to Moses by God, as a new name which he chose for himself, but as a name... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Job 12:11-12

Job 12:11-12. Doth not the ear try words? &c.— Doth not the ear try words, as the palate tasteth food? Job, being about to speak of the supreme and absolute dominion of God over his creatures, begins with two proverbial expressions, in which he seems to insinuate that he wished for other judges of what he had to say, who, endued with a more mature and solid understanding of spiritual things, were better able to distinguish sincere piety, and the just complaints of oppressed innocence, from... read more

Job 12:13. With him is wisdom and strength— With him dwell, &c. Counsel and understanding are peculiar to him. Thus Houbigant; who supposes the expression of dwelling to be in immediate opposition to the foregoing verse, where wisdom is said to BE with old men, but here to DWELL with GOD, as in its proper and peculiar home, the fountain of all human wisdom. Job shews, in the following verses, that the affairs of the world, and the fortunes of men, are subject to such a variety of changes... read more

9. In all these cases, says Job, the agency must be referred to Jehovah, though they may seem to man to imply imperfection (Job 12:6; Job 9:24). This is the only undisputed passage of the poetical part in which the name "Jehovah" occurs; in the historical parts it occurs frequently. read more

11. As the mouth by tasting meats selects what pleases it, so the ear tries the words of others and retains what is convincing. Each chooses according to his taste. The connection with Job 12:12 is in reference to Bildad's appeal to the "ancients" (Job 12:12- :). You are right in appealing to them, since "with them was wisdom," c. But you select such proverbs of theirs as suit your views so I may borrow from the same such as suit mine. read more

13. In contrast to, "with the ancient is wisdom" ( :-), Job quotes a saying of the ancients which suits his argument, "with Him (God) is (the true) wisdom" ( :-); and by that "wisdom and strength" "He breaketh down," c., as an absolute Sovereign, not allowing man to penetrate His mysteries man's part is to bow to His unchangeable decrees (Job 1:21). The Mohammedan saying is, "if God will, and how God will." read more
