Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - John 16:12

“I have yet many things to say to you, but you cannot bear them now.” Jesus is fully aware how baffled and battered, apprehensive and helpless the disciples are feeling. They cannot cope in their present condition with what He wants to tell them. But that is one reason why the Paraclete is coming. He has much to reveal to them which will eventually finish up as the New Testament. Note that when the Spirit guides (v. 13) it will be Jesus Who will be speaking. read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - John 16:1-33

John 16. There is no break between chs. 15 and 16 . Jesus has told them beforehand, so that His death and their suffering may not daunt their faith, as the Baptist was “ offended” by the course of the ministry, which did not correspond to his Messianic expectation. They must expect actual excommunication. Their execution will be thought an acceptable sacrifice to God ( cf. the Jewish comment on Numbers 25:13, “ He who sheds the blood of a transgressor should be thought of as if he had... read more

Matthew Poole's English Annotations on the Holy Bible - John 16:12

Not any new articles of doctrine or faith, for, John 15:15, he had told them that he had made known unto them all things which he had heard of the Father of that nature; but some things (probably) which concerned them with reference to their office as apostles, the constitution, state, and government of the church: but, saith he, ye cannot bear them now; in regard of their passion, or rather of their more imperfect state. read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - John 16:1-15

EXPLANATORY AND CRITICAL NOTESChap. John 15:27. The Spirit does not teach historical facts, but reveals their true meaning. Hence the apostolic testimony and the testimony of the Spirit form but a single act, in which each contributes a different element—the one the historic narrative, the other the internal evidence and the victorious power. This relation is reproduced in our day in all living preaching derived from Holy Scripture. St. Peter equally distinguishes the two kinds of testimony... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - John 16:12

John 16:12 Gradual Revelations The thought which our Saviour here expressed was in strict accordance with His whole method of life. He was always measuring what and how much His followers could bear, for He was that true wisdom which cometh down from above and is always gentle. I. And here let us notice the blessedness of having the mind placed under God's own direct teaching. The great power of a teacher lies in being able to have sympathy with the mind of his scholar. Sermon Bible Commentary - John 16:12-13

John 16:12-13 In these words our Lord describes two sorts of persons those who cannot yet bear the truth, and those who, through the guiding of the Spirit, are led into all truth. They who could not yet bear it were, we see, our Lord's disciples; they who had followed Him from the beginning of His ministry; they, of whom He had just before said, that they were all clean, except Judas, who betrayed Him. Still, He had much to say which they could not yet bear, but which they should be able to... read more

Scofield's Reference Notes - John 16:12

I have yet Christ's pre-authentication of the New Testament: (1) he expressly declared that He would leave "many things" unrevealed (John 16:12). (2) He promised that this revelation should be completed ("all things") after the Spirit should come, and that such additional revelation should include new prophecies (John 16:0:)). (3) He chose certain persons to receive such additional revelations, and to be His witnesses to them Matthew 28:19; John 15:27; John 16:13; Acts 1:8; Acts 9:15-17. (4) he... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - John 16:1-33

Shall we turn to John's gospel, chapter 16.Now, these words in the sixteenth chapter have to be understood with the background as Jesus has been in the upper room with His disciples. He has told them as He had the Lord's supper with them that He would not drink of the fruit of the vine until He drank it anew in the kingdom. After supper, He has washed their feet, giving to them an example of what the ministry is all about; it's that of a servant. And then there in the upper room He speaks to... read more

John 16:1 . These things have I spoken, that ye should not be offended, so as to stumble and shrink back from the cause in which you are engaged. Expulsion from the synagogue was to a jew next to death, being accounted an expulsion from the covenant of mercy, and from the paradise of God. John 16:6 . Because I have said these things, sorrow hath filled your heart. The disciples were so astounded at the extended view of their persecutions, and at the departure of their Lord, that they... read more
