F.B. Meyer's 'Through the Bible' Commentary - Mark 15:22-47

a King upon His Cross Mark 15:22-47 Our Lord refused to drink the potion prepared by the women of Jerusalem, in order to stupefy those who were crucified and so deaden the sense of pain, because He would drain the cup to its dregs. It was nine o’clock in the morning when He was nailed to the cross. His persecutors were, as they thought, destroying the Temple of which He had spoken in John 2:19 , and making its restoration impossible. In fact, however, they were giving Him the opportunity of... read more

G. Campbell Morgan's Exposition on the Whole Bible - Mark 15:1-47

This chapter is one of those that needs little explanation and must ever be read in awe and reverence. Pilate represented the Roman empire, which attempted to secure itself by its ordinary methods of policy and force, and then fell, crushed and broken forever. Simon was “impressed," that is compelled to His service; but it is most probable that this man became a devout follower of the Master, and that his sons, Rufus and Alexander, also were well known to the early Christians. We gaze and... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 15:40-47

Laying Jesus To Rest (15:40-47). The women who had ministered to Jesus and His disciples were gathered at the cross. It is impossible to imagine the feelings in their hearts as they saw the figure of their beloved Master hanging on the cross. But they were determined to wait it out to the end, and do what they could to see that His beloved body was given proper burial. Although they probably had no idea how they would do it. And then to theirs and everyone’s surprise a member of the Sanhedrin,... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 15:42

‘And when evening was now come, because it was the preparation, that is the day before the Sabbath.’ Note the use of ‘paraskeue’ which can mean Friday specifically or the day of preparation before a special Sabbath. Here it means Friday the day before the normal Sabbath (compare John 19:14 where it probably also means ‘the Friday of Passover week’), for if the Last Supper had been a Passover meal it would already be a special Sabbath, 15th of Nisan. ‘Evening was now come.’ That is it was... read more

Peter Pett's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 15:43-45

‘There came Joseph of Arimathea, a councillor of honourable standing, who also himself was looking for the Kingly Rule of God, and he boldly went in to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. And Pilate was amazed that he was already dead, and calling to him the centurion he asked him whether he had been dead very long, and when he learned it of the centurion he granted the corpse to Joseph.’ Philo of Alexandria mentions that on occasion, especially at festivals, the bodies of crucified men... read more

Arthur Peake's Commentary on the Bible - Mark 15:42-47

Mark 15:42-2 Corinthians : . The Burial of Jesus.— Deuteronomy 21:23 enjoined the burial of dead criminals before nightfall ( cf. Josephus, Wars, IV, v.2). The day of the Crucifixion being the preparation for the Sabbath, i.e. Friday, the carrying out of the law was doubly desirable. It required courage to approach Pilate, but Joseph of Arimathæ a enjoyed sufficient distinction to venture. Pilate granted him the corpse (the brutal technical word is used). Joseph hastily placed the body... read more

Preacher's Complete Homiletical Commentary - Mark 15:42-47

CRITICAL AND EXEGETICAL NOTESMark 15:43. Went in boldly.—Took courage and went in.MAIN HOMILETICS OF THE PARAGRAPH.—Mark 15:42-47(PARALLELS: Matthew 27:57-61; Luke 23:50-56.)Seasons of trial, times of preparation.—The unrenewed mind is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. Things seen and temporal have a tendency to carnalise the affections, and we are apt to forget whence we come, what we are doing, and whither we are going. He therefore who is preparing for a happy immortality... read more

Sermon Bible Commentary - Mark 15:43

Mark 15:43 The Sanhedrim of Jerusalem consisted of seventy members, of whom twenty-four were the heads of the Priesthood, twenty-four were heads of the tribes of Israel, representing the laity, and twenty-two were Scribes learned in the law. Joseph was no doubt one of the noble representatives of the people; and, as such shared, in the functions of government and was conversant with those sacred Scriptures which formed the basis of the Jewish commonwealth. I. Arimathea is thought to have been... read more

Chuck Smith Bible Commentary - Mark 15:1-47

Let's turn to Mark's gospel chapter 15.Jesus was arrested in the Garden of Gethsemane in the evening or late night, and immediately brought before Caiaphas the high priest and some of the rulers where they held an illegal night tribunal. And they tried to develop charges that they could bring against Jesus before the Roman court because they were determined that Jesus must be put to death. But they did not have the power of condemning a prisoner to death. That was Rome's power. So, their trial... read more
