Some modern translations, including the New International Version, include the following note after Mark 16:8: “The earliest manuscripts and some other ancient witnesses do not have verses 9–20.” A similar insertion is found at the end of John 7. It reads, “The earliest manuscripts and many other ancient witnesses do not have John 7:53—8:11. A few manuscripts include these verses, wholly or in part, after John 7:36, John 21:25, Luke 21:38 or Luke 24:53.”

What Does Jesus Want Me to Do? — Mark 16:9-20

The Incredible Journey

The risen Lord has appeared to his followers as they are gathered together, and he has rebuked them for their stubborn refusal to believe. Now, he is going to tell them what the next steps are. I wonder what instructions he’s going to give them? 
 
He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to all creation. – Mark 16:15 
 
This is the short version of what we call the Great Commission. It’s important to understand that in its proper context when Jesus tells his disciples to preach the gospel to all creation, the gospel specifically refers to what he has achieved at the Cross. And by the Cross, I mean both his atoning death and resurrection. 
 
The Cross is both the culmination and manifestation of everything Jesus taught. That’s why, in the longer version of the Great Commission that we find in the gospel of Matthew, Jesus tells them to teach all nations to obey everything he has commanded them. Here, Jesus tells his followers what to do, where to do it, and the instructions for how to do it. The “what” is to “go”. The “where” is “into all the world.” The instructions are to “preach the Gospel to all creation.” 
 
It’s significant that just after rebuking them for their stubborn refusal to believe, Jesus gives them the greatest job ever instead of firing them! No matter where you’re at in your relationship with Jesus, he’s calling you to do the same. “Get up and go!” he says, “I have a job for you!” When you realise that the gospel is such great Good News, you won’t be able to keep yourself from answering the call of the Lord. You, too, will go into all the world and announce the gospel to all creation. 
 
Is that what you’re doing right now? If you’re not excited enough about the gospel to do it, could it be that you still haven’t really understood it?

As we stretch across Arkansas, we remain one house believing for the next one to come to Jesus. We exist to connect people to the heart of God, the salvation of Jesus, and the family within His church.

The Book of Mark ends with Jesus appearing first to Mary Magdalene, to the two disciples, and then to the 11 disciples "who were reclining at the table." (Within 3 days of His crucifixion they're just lounging around eating a meal? What's up with this passage? This might be minor, but worth briefly exploring.) Jesus rebuked them "for their unbelief and hardness of heart, because they had not believed those who saw him after he had risen." He then challenges them with the Great Commission! What are you doing to fulfill the Great Commission? 
 
REFLECTION: 
 
• There is ONE clear assignment from Jesus: TELL EVERYONE ABOUT ME. 
• Of the many things Jesus told us to do, this is the most important. 
• We have been given the gift of salvation, and if we believe, the ONLY response isi to share it with others.

I am a preacher and a pastor at the Minnehaha Church of Christ in Vancouver Washington. I am also a teacher at Northwest College of the Bible in Portland Oregon. On this channel, I provide sermons, lessons, communion meditations, and other resources to help Christians grow in their understanding of God's word and its application to life and ministry. I am a firm believer in expository preaching and gospel-centered ministries. I will occasionally preach a topical sermon but the majority of the sermons on this channel will be expository sermons. My prayer is that God will use these videos to lead people to Christ and help Christians "grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ." 2 Peter 3:18

The Gospel of Mark began with these words: 
“The beginning of the gospel about Jesus Christ, the Son of God.” 
Mark 1:1 
 
With that beginning, it is fitting for the Gospel of Mark to end with the Great Commission, the instructions Jesus gave all Christians to proclaim the Gospel to the whole world. This is a message that is especially important for Christians today. During a global pandemic when many of our friends and relatives are discouraged, anxious, and worried about sickness and death, we need to be reaching out to them with the message of the Gospel. 
 
And regardless of what the government might say about nonessential work, Jesus is telling us that the Great Commission is still essential work of every Christian. But how can we carry out the Great Commission when many of us are in quarantine or “sheltering at home”? Well, believe it or not, Mark 16 tells us how to carry out the Great Commission even in the crazy times we live in today. 
 
This is a sermon based on Mark chapter 16. I preached this message at the Minnehaha Church of Christ in Vancouver Washington on Sunday, May 3, 2020.
