Born: August 13, 1851, Alzey, Hessen-Darmstadt, Germany. Died: April 24, 1933, New York City. Son of a rab­bi, Ad­ler em­i­grat­ed to Amer­i­ca in 1857, and grad­u­at­ed from Co­lum­bia Col­lege in 1870. He found­ed the New York So­ci­e­ty for Ethic­al Cul­ture, the Eth­ic­al Cul­ture move­ment, and the New York Eth­ic­al Cul­ture schools. He was al­so a pro­fess­or of He­brew and Or­i­ent­al lit­er­a­ture at Cor­nell Un­i­ver­si­ty, Ith­a­ca, New York (1874-1876), pro­fess­or of So­cial and Po­lit­ic­al Eth­ics at Co­lum­bia Un­i­ver­si­ty (1902-1933), and gave the Hib­bert Lectures at Ox­ford Un­i­ver­si­ty in 1923. His works include: Creed and Deed, 1877
