(1630-1691) English Presbyterian. Flavel was the son of Richard Flavel, a minister. John was born in Worcestershire. It was said that, while a small child, a nightingale made her nest outside his window, "where she used to sing most sweetly" and this affected him with "a poetical nature." He was educated by his father and entered Oxford at an early age. Flavel was ordained in Salisbury on October 17, 1650 and immediately began preaching a Diptford. He then went to Dartmouth, but was removed from his church by the Act of Uniformity. He began preaching in the countryside until 1671 when the laws were relaxed and he was able to return to Dartmouth. Among his writings are The Soul of Man, A Saint Indeed, Treatise on the Soul of Man and The Methods of Grace .
