(185-284) Early Christian philosopher, writer and apologist. Origen wanted to be martyred along with his father, but he was restrained by his mother. She hid his clothes and the shame of running naked down the street prevented him from following his father. Origen's most outstanding work was the Hexapla, a Bible in six columns, each being a translation into a different language. He wrote a number of commentaries and apologetic works. He was put out of the church for his teaching of universal salvation and the existence of souls before embodiment.
