(1615-1691) A Puritan, Baxter was ordained in 1638 by passing his examination, in spite of the fact that he had little formal education. He sought to moderate many of the controversies raging during his lifetime and was ousted from the Church of England by the Act of Uniformity. He was convicted of sedition and served 21 months in the Tower of London. During his lifetime he wrote a number of hymns and books including The Reformed Pastor, an indispensable and relevant work for church leaders today. His Saints' Everlasting Rest was a runaway best seller and his Christian Directory is considered the greatest Christian counseling manual of all time.
