Ezra 5:1-17 Resuming ministry in the face of threatening opposition requires wisdom from God's Word and confidence in the importance and legitimacy of the mission. 
 
Disappointment is Satan's powerful tool. God's people were excited about their mission to return from exile and rebuild God's house. 
 
However, after repeated resistance and defeat, it has been redirected to less important priorities (such as home renovation projects) for the past 16 years. 
 
Discouragement and acceptance of the status quo had set in. The prophets powerfully delivered God’s Word of exhortation to motivate the people to restart the temple building project and to persevere and remain on task despite further opposition. 
 
Their conviction regarding the significance and legitimacy of their mission helped them in their interactions with the government officials that were raising critical questions.

In [last week’s] text, we saw the glorious transformation, the fruit of the people’s repentance and faith in God expressed in Ezra 5:2- “Then Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua the son of Jozadak arose and began to rebuild the house of God that is in Jerusalem, and the prophets of God were with them, supporting them” (Ezra 5:2).  This spirit of confidence and unification, between Israel’s prophets, priests, and civil leaders is what pervades the rest of chapter 5 through the conclusion of Ezra chapter 6.  We would be remiss if we failed to recognize that this reality of a unified prophet, priest, and king (if you will) foreshadowed a day in which these offices would be unified in a singular person: namely, the Lord Jesus Christ.  Such a reality is truly glorious and awe-inspiring, and it would be impossible to deny the working of God’s Spirit on the hearts of his people, leading them back to faithful obedience and action.

Seduction, suffering, and slander of God’s people left the temple unbuilt so God’s prophets, Zechariah and Haggai, called the people out on their inaction. Haggai rebuked God’s people for prioritising building their own houses while God’s house remained in ruins. 
 
Rebuilding the temple was necessary to rebuild relationship with God. We cannot waltz into the presence of God without him making a way to meet us on his terms: the temple was that holy mediating place. Israel’s rebuilt temple was eventually destroyed, but we have a living temple in Christ. May we not be too busy building our own life that we forget Christ and his church. Use your gifts and passions to meet the needs of the church and the world.
