Sa succession est assurée par le technicien, mais Jacques Ellul montre que la classe ouvrière et la gauche dans son ensemble ont complètement intégré sa vision du monde. Le bourgeois moderne est un technocrate - conservateur ou soixante-huitard - voué au culte du néant et à la célébration de la société du spectacle. Autant dire que ce livre, écrit à la veille de Mai 68, n'a rien perdu de sa pertinence, et déboulonne pas mal de chromos, tout en racontant la saga assez fabuleuse d'une classe sociale protéiforme.
