A Newman Synthesis

A Newman Synthesis

by John Henry Newman
Father Przywara has so arranged the great Newman passages as to reconstitute Newman's thought, systematically and in its completeness as it was present in Newman's own mind.

He has divided the spiritual growth of man into three stages:

First: fallen man's path to Christianity
Secondly: His conviction of Christianity and of Christ as his divinely willed and commissioned Messiah and Saviour.
Finally: Redeemed man's path in Christianity, the way of faith which leads to the beatific vision of one God in three Persons; the way of complete surrender to God's guidance and of brotherly love as a member of Christ's one body, a life lived from and in God.

The booek is thus all Newman - 400 pages of Newman's "regal" English; the passages fall into sequence without the aid of any connecting links externally supplied. Newman surveys the whole of hte conflict and co-operation of nature and grace. May it herald for him a second English spring.
