Lectures, Sermons, and Writings
"Of all the eminent ministers in the Highalnds," says Dr Kennedy, "none is more famous than Mr Lachlan Mackenzie of Lochcarron." Such is the verdict penned by the prince of Highland preachers on the famous minster of Lochcarron. The extraordinary hold Mr Lachlan had over his own people who were privileged to hear his preaching and come under his own saintly influence, can be easily explained, but when it is borne in mind that the sphere of his influence passed far beyond his own parish, until at last he occupied the pre-eminent position assigned to him in the above quoted sentence, it may be asked to what may this remarkable influence be due. Dr Kennedy attributes it to his genius, peculiar Christian experience, and his great acceptance as a preacher. None of the great Highland preachers - some of them very notable in their own different spheres - had the touch of genius that belonged to Mr Lachlan. His profound spiritual experiences appealed to the Lord's people in his own parish and throughout the Highalnds, not only in his own day but also in ours. It is for this reason that his writings are read and his sayings are treasured still by those who fear the Lord. Originality of thought, apt and striking illustrations, emphatic utterance, with an authority and unction in the delivery of his discourses, all combined to lift his sermons above the commonplace. Added to this he fed the flock of God on the finest of the wheat, and they hung on his lips as those who were listening to a messenger of the Most High God.
