Ken Ham

Kenneth Alfred Ham (born October 20, 1951) is the Australian-born president of Answers in Genesis USA. A vocal advocate for a young Earth and a literal interpretation of the Book of Genesis, his cross-country speaking tours and many books make him one of the better known young-Earth creationists.

Between 1987 and 1993, Ham worked for the Institute for Creation Research (ICR), one of the oldest American Creationist organisations, and a leading young-Earth organisation.

In 1994, with the assistance of what is now Creation Ministries International (Australia), Ham and colleagues Mark Looy and Mike Zovath set up Creation Science Ministries, later renamed Answers in Genesis. The Christian ministry specialises in Young Earth Creationism, and is primarily devoted to convincing people that the initial chapters in Genesis should be taken as literally true and historically accurate.

For his contributions to evangelism, he has been granted two honorary degrees (by Temple Baptist College in 1997 and by Liberty University in 2004). Answers in Genesis opened its $27 million, 70,000 sq ft (6,500 m2) Creation Museum in Petersburg, Kentucky on May 28, 2007.

Since the dates are referenced to Noah’s age, it makes the most sense that Moses kept the dating system that was utilized on the ark while penning Genesis 7–8. Keep in mind that the later Israelite calendar (i.e., the Babylonian calendar) was lunar.12 The months alternated with 29 or 30 days. In the Bible, we find that 150 days was equivalent to 5 months based on the context in the Flood account (Genesis 7:24–8:413). This would yield month-lengths of 30 days each, not 29 and 30 days alternating for 5 months (as in a lunar calendar).

Framework hypothesis. Dr. Meredith Kline (1922–2007), who accepted many evolutionary ideas, popularized this view in America.24 It is very common in many seminaries today. Those who hold to framework treat Genesis 1 as a literary device (think poetic or semi-poetic), with the first three days paralleling and equating to the last three days of creation. These days are not seen as 24-hour days but are taken as metaphorical or allegorical to allow for ideas like evolution/millions of years to be entertained. Hence, Genesis 1 is treated as merely being a literary device to teach that God created everything (essentially in 3 days25).26 However, Genesis 1 is not written as poetry but as literal history.

But some object and ask, what about the “innocent children” — if there were any left — at the time of the Flood? First they weren’t innocent (Romans 3:2329). But again, the onus would be on the parents and guardians who refused to allow their evil children the possibility of survival on the ark!

The Flood was a judgment on sin and the ark was a means of salvation from that catastrophe. All you had to do was enter the door of the ark to be saved. In the same way, Jesus Christ ultimately judges sin for all eternity. Yet Jesus Christ describes Himself as the door by which all must enter to be saved from their sin. The shed blood of Jesus Christ, who took the punishment for sin upon Himself, is the only means of salvation. Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved (Acts 4:12).

This is what we see in our own modern secular culture where millions of babies are aborted (murdered through child sacrifice) every year through state-funded organizations like Planned Parenthood! The population of the USA has lost over 55 million people to abortion since the Supreme Court permitted the murder of babies in 1973 (and counting).

Childbirths were likely reduced — people were making a name for themselves being men of renown (Genesis 6:417), which means they would hardly care or have time for any children! With people living lives that are about themselves, they rarely care for children — even in our culture today! With pre-Flood wickedness (Genesis 6:518) abounding (which often includes sodomy/homosexuality — Genesis 13:1319; see also Judges 19–20), this would naturally reduce the possibility of children and population growth. This would be especially true if this population reduction were consistent in the century leading up to the Flood.

Consider the Lord’s prophetic promise to Abraham and then Isaac was that God Himself would increase them (Genesis 13:16,12 22:17,13 26:414; Exodus 1:715; Deuteronomy 1:1016) — and this came true. God is the one responsible for multiplying Abraham’s descendants, and this exceeding increase came to Israel. The Egyptians recognized this and wanted to do something about this population explosion occurring with the Israelites — hence enslaving them and trying to kill their baby boys in an effort to control them! So this was an exceptional growth rate discussed in the Bible, but this would yield a population (if ~equal male to female) just over 1.2 million people and their children in these ten generations. This almost sets an extreme upper limit, as the Lord was not increasing the people before the Flood, as He did with the Israelites. Thus, we tentatively suggest the pre-Flood population was far less than this at its peak — perhaps just a few hundred thousand. Allow us to elaborate.

Historian Bill Cooper’s research in After the Flood provides dates from several ancient cultures.9 The first is that of the Anglo-Saxons, whose history has 5,200 years from creation to Christ, according to the Laud and Parker Chronicles. Cooper’s research also indicated that Nennius’ record of the ancient British history has 5,228 years from creation to Christ. The Irish chronology has a date of about 4000 b.c. for creation, which is surprisingly close to Ussher and Jones! Even the Mayans had a date for the Flood of 3113 b.c.

There are also examples of petrified wood occurring as a mere product of nature — even without the heat! As an example, Dr. Andrew Snelling recounts: From the other side of the world comes a report of the chapel of Santa Maria of Health (Santa Maria de Salute), built in 1630 in Venice, Italy, to celebrate the end of The Plague. Because Venice is built on water saturated clay and sand, the chapel was constructed on 180,000 wooden pilings to reinforce the foundations. Even though the chapel is a massive stone block structure, it has remained firm since its construction. How have the wooden pilings lasted over 360 years? They have petrified! The chapel now rests on “stone” pilings!

Did you realize that one of the few commands given to mankind through Adam was “to be fruitful and multiply” (Genesis 1:286)? If man had intense disobedience to God (e.g., Genesis 6:5,7 6:128) 120 years prior to the Flood (Genesis 6:39), are we to believe they were still being obedient to God’s command here? Likely not!

Noah was 500–600 years old and knew better than to make a simple box that would have had significant issues in a global Flood (e.g., forces on the sharp corners would be too destructive, it could capsize if it was not facing into the wind and waves, and so on). The common way that a floating boat would keep from being turned perpendicular with the wind and waves is by having features on the front and back that naturally utilize the wind and waves to point it into the wind and waves. This would eliminate the need for sharp corners as well.

Gemstones are often produced naturally and quickly too when a volcano erupts. This is due to the rapid heat and pressure. At Mount St. Helens, which blew its top in 1980 and went off again in 1982, a magnificent array of gemstones was produced! The Mount St. Helens Gift shop website openly states: Volcanoes are an incubator for many of the World’s treasures. Other gems commonly associated with volcanic origins include Emerald, Diamond, Garnet, Peridot, and Topaz.

you can now take the remains of your cremated loved one and have their remaining carbon pressed into a diamond! Companies like LifeGem or Algordanza are currently doing this. The whole process only takes months. Writing about Algordanza’s work, Rae Ellen Bichell comments: Swiss company Algordanza takes cremated human remains and — under high heat and pressure that mimic conditions deep within the Earth — compress them into diamonds. . . . Each year, the remains of between 800 and 900 people enter the facility. About three months later, they exit as diamonds, to be kept in a box or turned into jewelry.7 There are also companies (like DNA2Diamonds or Pet-Gems) that specialize in turning your beloved pet’s ashes or hair into diamonds. The point is, it doesn’t take millions or billions of years to form diamonds, but rather days and weeks.

More than a century later, Athanasius Kircher published his Arca Noë in 1675, with lavish illustrations depicting a rectangular ark of biblical proportions. Kircher ark depiction In 1707, a German Bible had an image of Noah’s ark that also had been carefully considered. Famed Baptist commentator Dr. John Gill included it in his commentary on Genesis in 1748–63.4 The John Gill ark depiction

Let’s not forget another major factor to animal distribution — humans! Humans have been involved since the Flood. In fact, due to the ark, land animals and birds exist today. Although rats had already traveled to many parts of the world, by the age of exploration (a.d. 1400–1800), these stowaways were easily distributed around the world in all the European exploits and trade. They were commonplace on most ships and ended up all over the world because men accidentally transported them. Think how many insects were surely taken to various places in the same manner. Throughout history, people have brought plants and animals to new locations, and those organisms have become permanent populations, interacting with the original creatures. For example, it is claimed that the Romans brought pheasants (members of the chicken kind) to England, and they have since been regular inhabitants of various habitats. In fact, the Romans redistributed organisms from one side of the Roman Empire to the other.

There have been ancient ships found with some almost unbelievable planking styles that helped make the ship structurally sound, lighter, and even proved to be superior in waterproofing! Ark researcher Tim Lovett comments: Ancient shipbuilders usually began with a shell of planks (strakes) and then built internal framing (ribs) to fit inside. This is the complete reverse of the familiar European method where planking was added to the frame. In shell-first construction, the planks must be attached to each other somehow. Some used overlapping (clinker) planks that were dowelled or nailed, others used rope to sew the planks together. The ancient Greeks used a sophisticated system where the planks were interlocked with thousands of precise mortise and tenon joints. The resulting hull was strong enough to ram another ship, yet light enough to be hauled onto a beach by the crew.6

Could animals have migrated to a part of the world they were previously familiar with (latitude and longitude)? We’ve always wondered this. If a continent ended up at a particular place on the globe, and migratory animals thrived in those former areas before continental movement, is it possible that some attempted to migrate back to that original latitude and longitude?

Most believe the Flood of Noah triggered the Ice Age. The rising magmas, lavas, and hot waters associated with continental plate movements would have caused ocean temperatures to rise. Also, fine ash from volcanic eruptions probably lingered in the upper atmosphere in post-Flood years, which, unlike a greenhouse effect, would reduce the sunlight for cooler summers. So the mechanism for such a rare event was in place due to Genesis 6–8. But what happens in an ice age? A lot of water is taken out of the ocean and deposited on land, so the ocean level drops.7 This exposes land bridges. One well-known land bridge was the one that crossed what we call today “the Bering Strait” from Alaska to Russia, so it is easily feasible for animals to have walked from Asia to North and South America.

In other instances, some of these animals may have made it to a particular area and become extinct for various reasons — ultimately due to sin, of course! One objection to this is that we should find fossils of them if they lived in an area, but this is fallacious.2 Paul Taylor states the following regarding this subject on fossils: But the expectation of such fossils is a presuppositional error. Such an expectation is predicated on the assumption that fossils form gradually and inevitably from animal populations. In fact, fossilization is by no means inevitable. It usually requires sudden, rapid burial. Otherwise the bones would decompose before permineralization. One ought likewise to ask why it is that, despite the fact that millions of bison used to roam the prairies of North America, hardly any bison fossils are found there. Similarly, lion fossils are not found in Israel even though we know that lions once lived there.

In general, placental animals would move slower than marsupials, which can collect their young (e.g., in pouches) and continue migrating. Many placental animals need to stop and settle for a time to raise their young but, theoretically, great varieties of land animals could have gone to any region of Europe, Asia, and Africa.
