Matthew Henry's Complete Commentary - 1 Kings 7:13-47

We have here an account of the brass-work about the temple. There was no iron about the temple, though we find David preparing for the temple iron for things of iron, 1 Chron. 29:2. What those things were we are not told, but some of the things of brass are here described and the rest mentioned. I. The brasier whom Solomon employed to preside in this part of the work was Hiram, or Huram (2 Chron. 4:11), who was by his mother's side an Israelite, of the tribe of Naphtali, by his father's side a... read more

He was a widow's son of the tribe of Naphtali ,.... In 2 Chronicles 2:14 , his mother is said to be of the daughters of Dan, as she might be, and yet her son of the tribe of Naphtali; for either she was of the city of Dan, which is placed in the tribe of Naphtali F13 Vid. Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible - 1 Kings 7:13

Solomon sent and fetched Hiram out of Tyre - This was not the Tyrian king, mentioned before, but a very intelligent coppersmith, of Jewish extraction by his mother's side, who was probably married to a Tyrian. In 2 Chronicles 2:14 , this woman is said to be of the daughters of Dan, but here of the tribe of Naphtali. The king of Tyre, who gives the account as we have it in Chronicles, might have made the mistake, and confounded the two tribes; or she might have been of... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - 1 Kings 7:13

And king Solomon sent [rather, had sent ( 2 Chronicles 2:13 )] and fetched Hiram out of Tyre. [This is our historian's brief version of the transaction which is recorded in 2 Chronicles 2:7-14 . He has not mentioned before ( 1 Kings 5:6 ) Solomon's request for a master builder. Hiram, like his namesake the king, is elsewhere ( 2 Chronicles 2:18 ; 2 Chronicles 4:11 , 2 Chronicles 4:16 ) called Huram or Hirom (verse 40). See note on 1 Kings 5:1 . In the first of these... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - 1 Kings 7:14

He was a widow's son of the tribe of Naphtali [In 2 Chronicles 2:14 he is described as the "son of a woman of the daughters of Daniel" The discrepancy is only apparent. For in the first place it is not absolutely necessary to understand by Dan the tribe of that name. It may well refer to the town, formerly Leshem ( Joshua 19:47 ), or Laish ( 18:7 , 18:27 ), colonised by the Danites, and thenceforward bearing their name (verse 29), which was situated within the borders of Naphtali.... read more

Hiram’s mother, while by birth of the tribe of Dan, had had for her first husband a man of the tribe of Naphtali. (Compare this verse and margin reference.)All his work - The work that he personally did for Solomon seems to have been limited to metal-work, and indeed to works in brass. Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - 1 Kings 7:13-14

1 Kings 7:13-14. Solomon sent and fetched Hiram Though he was an Israelite by birth, yet he dwelt at Tyre; and, it is likely, had the privileges of that city, and so was one of King Hiram’s subjects. And therefore ( 2Ch 2:13 ) that king says he had sent him to Solomon, that is, had granted Solomon’s request, who had requested that this man might come and serve him. His father was a man of Tyre Whom his mother, when a widow, had married. A worker in brass And in gold, and stone, and... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - 1 Kings 7:13-51

More concerning the temple (7:13-51)Israel seems to have lost the spiritual insight and artistic skill that in the time of Moses enabled its craftsmen to design and make the decoration for God’s dwelling place (cf. Exodus 31:1-6). Solomon therefore hired a craftsman from Tyre to do the bronze work and other decorations for the temple, with no apparent concern for the wrong religious ideas this man may have had. By coincidence this hired craftsman was named Hiram (GNB: Huram), the same as the... read more
