The Pulpit Commentary - Nahum 2:12

The figure of the lieu is continued, and this verse, in loose apposition to the preceding, may be best explained by continuing the interrogation in thought—Where is now the lion that used to tear in pieces, etc.? The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps. The Assyrian monarch provided for his children and dependents by plundering other nations. His lionesses may mean his wives and concubines. It was the custom both with the Persians and Assyrians to assign towns and provinces to... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Nahum 2:13

I am against thee. The destruction shall be surely accomplished, because God himself directs it. Literally, I to thee ( Nahum 3:5 ; Jeremiah 51:25 ; Ezekiel 38:3 ). The Lord of hosts ( sabaoth ) , Lord of the forces of heaven and earth, and therefore omnipotent. κύριος παντοκράτωρ : I will burn her chariots in the smoke. The Pulpit Commentary - Nahum 2:13

Man incuring the Divine displeasure "Behold, I am against thee, saith the Lord of hosts." This attitude of God towards man— I. IMPLIES WRONG DOING ON MAN 'S PART . God is not thus adverse to man for naught. "His delights are with the sons of men" ( Proverbs 8:31 ). Sin alienates man from God, and causes God to be righteously displeased with man. II. INVOLVES MAN IN PRESENT DISTRESS . Man cannot be at ease whilst under the ban of Jehovah. "In his favour is... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Nahum 2:13

Behold I, Myself, am against thee - (Literally, “toward thee”). God, in His long-suffering, had, as it were, looked away from him; now He looked toward (as in Psalms 37:20) him, and in His sight what wicked one should stand? “Saith the Lord of hosts,” whose power is infinite and He changes not, and all the armies of heaven, the truly angels and evil spirits and men are in His Hand, whereto He directs or overrules them. “And I will burn her chariots in the smoke.” The Assyrian sculptures attest... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Nahum 2:11-13

Nahum 2:11-13. Where is the dwelling of the lions Where is the lion-like courage and strength, which formerly characterized the king of Nineveh and his people? What is become of the stately palaces of the king and princes of Nineveh? who, like so many lions, cruel, violent, and irresistible, knew no other law than their pride and ambition; preying upon their own people, and the neighbouring countries, and filling their houses with the spoils they took from them, as the lions fill their dens... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Nahum 2:1-13

2:1-3:19 THE DESTRUCTION OF NINEVEHDestroyed because of cruelty (2:1-13)Chapters 2 and 3 consist of two separate poems on the same subject, the destruction of Nineveh and the reasons for it. Nahum begins his graphic description of the attack on Nineveh by calling upon the watchman on the city wall to alert the city that the enemy is approaching. God is now going to destroy those who destroyed Israel and oppressed Judah (2:1-2).The prophet pictures the brightly uniformed soldiers, the gleaming... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Nahum 2:12

"The lion did tear in pieces enough for his whelps, and strangled for his lioness, and filled his caves with prey, and his dens with ravin."Due to the remains of animals killed for prey, with leftovers decaying as new prey is brought in, a lion's den is positively the foulest and most detestable place on earth, an apt figure indeed of the Assyrian capitol.Another view of the persons intended by this metaphor was that of Ironside, which seems preferable: "The lion is the king, and the lions and... read more
