The Pulpit Commentary - Habakkuk 2:6-8

National wrongs ending in national woes. No. 1. "Shall not all these take up a parable against him, and a taunting proverb against him, and say, Woe to him that increaseth that which is not his! how long? and to him that ladeth himself with thick clay! Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booties unto them?" etc. In these verses, up to the nineteenth inclusive, the prophet denounces upon the Chaldeans and Babylonians... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Habakkuk 2:7

That shall bite thee. As thou hast cruelly treated others, so shall they, like fierce vipers ( Jeremiah 8:17 ), bite thee. Henderson, Delitzsch, Keil, and others see in the word a double entendre connected with the meaning of "lending on interest," so the "biting" would signify "exacting a debt with usury." Such a term for usury is not unknown to classical antiquity; thus (quoted by Henderson) Aristoph; 'Nub.,' 12— δακόμενος υπὸ τὴς δαπάνης καὶ τῆς φάτνης καὶ τῶν χρεῶν ... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Habakkuk 2:8

The law of retaliation is asserted. All the remnant of the people ( peoples ) shall spoil thee. The remnant of the nations subjugated and plundered by the Chaldeans shall rise up against them. The downfall of Babylon was brought about chiefly by the combined forces of Media, Persia, and Elam ( Isaiah 21:2 ; Jeremiah 1:9 , etc.); and it is certain that Nebuchadnezzar, at one period of his reign, conquered and annexed Elam; and there is every probability that he warred successfully... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Habakkuk 2:7

Shall not they rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee? - The destruction of the wicked is ever sudden at last. Such was the flood Luke 17:26-27, the destruction of Sodom, of Pharaoh, of the enemies of God’s people through the Judges, of Sennacherib, Nineveh, Babylon by the Medes and Persians. Such shall the end be Matthew 24:43-44; Matthew 25:13; Luke 17:26-30; Luke 21:34-35; 1Th 5:3; 2 Peter 3:10; Revelation 16:15. As he by his oppressions had pierced others (it... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Habakkuk 2:8

Because (or For). The prophet assigns the reason of the woes he had just pronounced. “Thou (emphatic), thou hast spoiled many nations, all the resonant of the people shall spoil thee.” So Isaiah Isaiah 33:1, “When thou shalt cease to spoil, thou shalt be spoiled; when thou shalt make an end to deal treacherously, they shall deal treacherously with thee.” Boundless as his conquests were, each remaining people, tribe, or family shall be his foe. Theodotion: “Having subdued very many, thou shalt... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Habakkuk 2:7-8

Habakkuk 2:7-8. Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee? Is it not just, or what thou deservest, that others should suddenly rise against thee, and bite and tear thee? It is a metaphor taken from the hunting of wild beasts. And awake that shall vex thee As thou hast been a vexation to others by thy tyranny and cruelty. And thou shalt be for booties unto them Unto the Medes and Persians. The expression, rise up suddenly, very fitly describes the suddenness with which the... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Habakkuk 2:6-11

2:6-20 BABYLON’S SINSThe prophet now announces judgment on evildoers, listing five sins that God must punish. He introduces each condemnation with the words, ‘Woe to him who . . .’ (GNB: ‘You are doomed!’). The evildoer here is probably Babylon, but the condemnation has an application also to the Judeans. In fact, it applies to people of any age and race. The lust for power and wealth (2:6-11)To illustrate Babylon’s lust for power, the prophet refers to the practice of money-lending, which was... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Habakkuk 2:7

"Shall they not rise up suddenly that shall bite thee, and awake that shall vex thee, and thou shalt be for booty unto them?"Rapacious world-conquerors shall themselves be conquered; those who have plundered other nations shall themselves, at last, be booty for those whom they have robbed."Shall they not rise up suddenly ..." Barnes observed that the destruction of evil powers throughout history has occurred suddenly. Babylon fell in a day; and the sudden collapse of great wicked states has... read more

"Because thou hast plundered many nations, all the remnant,of the people shall plunder thee, because of men's blood, and for the violence done to the land, to the city and to all that dwell therein."This concludes the first woe and makes it clear that God will double unto the wicked oppressor states the full measure of their reward and retribution in kind for the wickedness they have committed against others."All the remnant of the people ..." This does not mean the remaining nations left... read more
