The Pulpit Commentary - Mark 6:8

They should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only . St. Matthew says ( Matthew 10:10 ), according to the best authorities ( μηδὲ ῥάβδον ), they were not to take a staff. St. Luke says the same as St. Matthew. The meaning is that they were not to make any special provision for their journey, but to go forth just as they were, depending upon God. Those who bad a staff might use it; those who had not one were not to trouble themselves to procure one. The scrip ( πήρα )... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Mark 6:8-11

See these verses fully explained in the notes at Matthew 10:9-15. In Matthew 10:5 they were commanded not to go among the Gentiles or Samaritans. Mark omits that direction, perhaps, because he was writing for the “Gentiles,” and the direction might create unnecessary difficulty or offence. Perhaps he omits it also because the command was given for a temporary purpose, and was not in force at the time of his writing. read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Mark 6:8-9

Mark 6:8-9. He commanded that they should take nothing for their journey That they might be always unencumbered, free, ready for motion. Save a staff only He that had one might take it; but he that had not, was not to provide one. No scrip, no bread Our Lord intended by this mission to initiate them into their apostolic work. And it was, doubtless, an encouragement to them all their life after, to recollect the care which God took of them when they had left all they had, and went out... read more

62. The twelve sent out (Matthew 10:5-42; Mark 6:7-13; Luke 9:1-6)Jesus sent out the twelve apostles to preach the good news that the kingdom of the Messiah had come. The miraculous powers of the Messiah were given to them also, so that the knowledge of his love and mercy might spread more quickly throughout the land (Luke 9:1-2).There would be no time during Jesus’ lifetime to spread the gospel worldwide, so the apostles had to concentrate on Israel. After Jesus’ death and resurrection they... read more

And he charged them that they should take nothing for their journey, save a staff only; no bread, no wallet, no money in their purse; but to go shod with sandals: and, said he, put not on two coats. The parallel accounts (Matthew 10:5-15; Luke 10:4-11) provide another pseudocon, inasmuch as Matthew said, "Get you no staff," whereas Mark's account plainly allowed one to be carried, with Luke agreeing with Matthew, "no staff." McMillan called this a "discrepancy."[12] But if we take Luke's... read more

1. The sending of the Twelve 6:6b-13 (cf. Matthew 9:35-11:1; Luke 9:1-6)Jesus continued to minister in Galilee. His ministry to the Twelve was an important part of His ministry. It prepared the disciples for further future service. It also anticipated His ministry through them following His ascension. This was the third tour of the Galilean villages that Mark reported (cf. Mark 1:14; Mark 1:39). read more

A. The mission of the Twelve 6:6b-30This is another of Mark’s "sandwich" or chiastic sections. The main event is Jesus’ sending the Twelve on a preaching and healing mission that extended His own ministry. Within this story, between their departing and their returning, the writer inserted the story of John the Baptist’s death. The main feature of that story that interested Mark was Herod Antipas’ perception of who Jesus was. The identity of Jesus, which is the heart of this section, becomes the... read more

The Twelve were to take with them no food, no luggage, and no money. They were not even to take an extra tunic that Palestinians often used as a blanket at night. The Twelve were to rely on God to provide their needs, including the need for hospitable hosts. The urgency of their mission required light travel, and it prohibited elaborate preparations. They could take a walking stick, and they would need sandals, but they were not to take spares. Apparently Jesus stressed what not to take more... read more

Most scholars dispute the inference. It is not... read more
