The Pulpit Commentary - Isaiah 30:12

Because ye despise this word ; rather, because ye reject this word (see 1 Samuel 8:7 ; 1 Samuel 15:23 , 1 Samuel 15:26 ; 2 Kings 17:15 , etc.). The "word" intended is probably the prophecy against trusting in Egypt ( Isaiah 30:1-7 ). And trust in oppression ; or, extortion . Oppressive measures employed to obtain the rich gifts which had to be sent into Egypt ( Isaiah 30:6 ) are probably intended. Gratz and Cheyne change the reading from 'oshek to 'ikkesh ... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Isaiah 30:13

This iniquity shall be to you as a breach ready to fall . Your sin in rebelling against God, rejecting the warnings of his prophets, and trusting in your own devices shall bring you into the condition of a wall in which there is a "breach," or rather, a "bulge," which therefore totters to its fall, and is liable to dissolve in ruins at any moment. Swelling out in a high wall. The higher the wail, the greater the danger, and the more complete the destruction. read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Isaiah 30:14

And he shall break it as the breaking of the potters' vessel that is broken in pieces . Isaiah is fond of mixed metaphors, and of superseding one metaphor by another. From comparing Judah's fall and ruin to the shattering of a lofty wall, he suddenly turns to a comparison of it with the breaking to pieces of an earthen pitcher. Judah shall be so broken as when the pitcher is crushed into minute fragments, so that there is no piece large enough to convey a coal from one fire for the lighting... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Isaiah 30:12

Wherefore thus saith the Holy One - Yahweh. There may be some reference here to the fact adverted to in Isaiah 30:11, that they were weary of the name of the Holy One of Israel, and of the perpetual reiteration of his commands. Isaiah, as if to show them how little he was disposed to comply with their prejudices, again makes an appeal to that name, and urges the authority of Yahweh. It is often proper to “repeat” the very doctrine to which sinners object, and which has given them offence. That... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Isaiah 30:13

Therefore this iniquity - That is, this refusing to trust in Yahweh, and this intention to seek the alliance of Egypt. The general sense of the figure here is, that their depending on Egypt would involve them ultimately in complete and awful ruin - ruin that should come upon them as suddenly as when a wall that had been long swelling out gives way.As a breach ready to fall - Like a breaking forth, or a bursting in a wall.Swelling out in a high wall - That is, where the foundation is not firm,... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Isaiah 30:14

And he shall break it as the breaking - That is, its breaking shall be like the breaking of a potter’s vessel. The Septuagint reads it, ‘And its fall (τὸ πτῶμα to ptōma) shall be like the breaking of an earthen vessel,’As the breaking of the potter’s vessel - That is, as an earthen, fragile vessel, which is easily dashed to pieces. The image here is all drawn from the bursting forth, or the complete ruin of the swelling wall; but the sense is, that the Jewish republic would be entirely... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Isaiah 30:12-14

Isaiah 30:12-14. Because ye despise this word, and trust in oppression In the wealth which you have gotten by oppression, whereby you now think to procure Egyptian succours; and perverseness In your perverse and rebellious course of sending to Egypt for help. This iniquity shall be to you as a breach, &c. Like a wall, which is high, and seems to be strong, but, swelling out in some parts, upon the least accident falleth down suddenly to the ground. Such shall be the issue of your... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Isaiah 30:1-33

The folly of relying on Egypt (30:1-33)All Isaiah’s warnings against an alliance with Egypt are in vain. As he learns that a group of Judean representatives is on its way to Egypt, he points out again how disastrous this alliance will prove to be. Judah’s reliance on Egypt is against God’s will and in the end will bring only disgrace upon Judah (30:1-5).Isaiah pictures the dangerous journey, as a caravan of donkeys and camels carry Judah’s payment through the dry southern region of Judah... read more
