Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Hosea 13:7

I will be unto them as a lion - They had waxen fat, were full; yet it was, to become themselves a prey. Their wealth which they were proud of, which they abused, allured their enemies. To cut off all hopes of God’s mercy, He says that he will be to them, as those creatures of His, which never spare. The fierceness of the lion, and the swiftness of the leopard, together portray a speedy inexorable chastisement. But what a contrast I He who bare Israel in the wilderness like a Father, who bare... read more

Hosea 13:6-8. According to their pasture, &c. As I was their shepherd, and provided pasture for them, so they were fully fed; they had an abundant plenty of all things. And their heart was exalted The consequence of their having this plenty was, that from thence they grew proud and high-minded. Therefore they have forgotten me They so abused my kindness to them, as to make it the occasion of their ingratitude; “for in the pride of their heart, which the miraculous supply of their... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Hosea 13:1-16

The destruction of Israel (13:1-16)Ephraim prided itself that it was the leading tribe in Israel and that the other tribes did as Ephraim told them. Ephraim must therefore bear the responsibility for the development of Baal worship in Israel. As the morning dew quickly vanishes with the rising of the sun, so Ephraim, and all the other tribes with it, will soon disappear (13:1-3).God saved the Israelites from slavery, looked after them in the wilderness and gave them a land, but in their... read more

"Therefore am I unto them as a lion; as a leopard will I watch by the way; I will meet them as a bear that is bereaved of her whelps, and will rend the caul of their heart; and there will I devour them like a lioness; the wild beast shall tear them."Hardly any comment is needed on such a denunciation as this. God who was the Shepherd of Israel would, because of their forgetting him, suddenly appear, not as a kind and loving shepherd, but as the most ferocious of wild beasts, and tear the heart... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Hosea 13:7-8

In view of Israel’s behavior, the Lord promised to become as an enemy of His people, like a lion or leopard that laid in wait to attack a sheep grazing in rich pasture (Hosea 13:6). He would confront them as a mother bear crazed by the loss of her cubs (cf. 2 Samuel 17:8; Proverbs 17:12). He would tear them open like a bear and consume them like a lioness. The lion, leopard, and bear were all wild animals native to Canaan that were notorious for their relentless manner of killing prey. read more

John Dummelow's Commentary on the Bible - Hosea 13:1-16

Israel’s Idolatry and its ConsequencesThe main thought of this c., which is a continuation of the last (cp. Hosea 12:9; Hosea 13:4), is the folly of Israel incurring the enmity of God, who had shown Himself such a loving friend, but might become so terrible an enemy. The sudden change of tone in Hosea 13:14 is highly characteristic.1.
