The Pulpit Commentary - Genesis 49:8-12

Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise —literally, Judah thou, will praise thee thy brethren, the word יְהוּדָה being a palpable play on יודוךָ (cf. Genesis 29:35 ). Leah praised Jehovah for his birth, and his brethren should extol him for his nobility of character, which even in his acts of sin could not be entirely obscured ( Genesis 37:26 ; Genesis 38:26 ), and certainly in his later days ( Genesis 43:8 ; Genesis 44:18-34 ) shone out with undiminished luster. ... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Genesis 49:8-12

Judah's portion. "Judah, thou art he whom thy brethren shall praise," etc. This dying vision and the utterances of the dying patriarch seem in harmony with all the surroundings in this part of the sacred record. The aged Jacob is dying. He has passed through such changes, such trials and successes, has had such seasons of depression and of exultation, but now his soul is filled with rapture at what will be the future of his children. He saw how he would live in his children, A man should... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Genesis 49:13

Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea ;—not παρ ὅρμον πλοίων ( LXX .), in statione navium (Vulgate), but to, or at, or beside, the. shore (from the idea of being washed by the waters of the ocean) of the waters, i.e. of the Galilean and Mediterranean seas— and he shall be for an haven of ships ;—literally, and he to, at, or on, a shore of ships, i.e. a shore where ships are unloaded ( so . shall dwell), the words being a repetition of the previous thought, with only... read more

- Jacob Blesses His Sons5. מכרה mekêrāh, “weapon;” related: כיר kārar or כרה kārāh dig. “Device, design?” related: מכר mākar “sell,” in Arabic “take counsel. Habitation.”10. מחקק mechoqēq, “lawgiver, judge, dispenser of laws.” This word occurs in six other places - Numbers 21:18; Deuteronomy 33:21; Jud. Deuteronomy 5:14; Psalms 60:9; Psalms 108:9; Isaiah 33:22; in five of which it clearly denotes ruler, or judge. The meaning “sceptre” is therefore doubtful. שׁילה shı̂ylôh, Shiloh, a... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Genesis 49:11

Genesis 49:11. Binding his foal unto the vine It is here foretold that the tribe of Judah should inhabit a fruitful land, and especially that it should abound with milk and wine: that vines should be so common and so strong that they should tie their asses to them, and so fruitful that they should load their asses from them, wine being as plentiful as water, so that the men of that tribe should be very healthful and lively, their eyes brisk and sparkling, and their teeth white. In Christ... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Genesis 49:1-28

Blessings on Jacob’s twelve sons (49:1-28)The last words of Jacob to his sons found their fulfilment in the history of Israel’s twelve tribes (49:1-2). First Jacob dealt with the six sons of Leah (see v. 3-15), then with the four sons of the minor wives (see v. 16-21), and finally with the two sons of Rachel (see v. 22-27).Reuben should have been strong, but through lack of self-control he lost the leadership of the nation (3-4; cf. 35:22). Simeon and Levi had been violent, and their tribes... read more

"Binding his foal unto the vine, And his ass's colt unto the choice vine; He hath washed his garments in wine, And his vesture in the blood of grapes. His eyes shall be red with wine, And his teeth white with milk. The safety, plenty, and peace of an abundant agricultural life are symbolized by these quaint figures of speech. It is not suggested here that Judah would ever actually wash his clothes in wine, but that the wine (and milk) would be so abundant that he could have done so! read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Genesis 49:13

"Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; And he shall be for a haven of ships; And his border shall be upon Sidon."What is said here of Zebulun is more applicable to Israel as a whole than to this particular tribe, and perhaps that is the way Jacob intended it, with the meaning that Zebulun shall share fully as a participant in the blessings promised to all Israel in Palestine. Many have pointed out that the actual settlement of this tribe did not place them adjacent to Sidon. Keil pointed... read more
