The Pulpit Commentary - 1 Peter 3:10

For he that will love life ; literally, he that willeth to love life. St. Peter deviates somewhat from the Septuagint Version of Psalms 34:12-16 , which he is quoting. The literal rendering of it is, "What man is he that desireth life, loving good days?" His connection of the participle θέλων with ἀγαπᾶν is remarkable. Perhaps the meaning is best given by Bengel, "Qui vult ita vivere, nt ipsum non taedeat vitro"—" Who wishes to live so that he will not weary of life;" so that he... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 1 Peter 3:10

For he that will love life - Greek, “He willing, (θέλων thelōn,) or that wills to love life.” It implies that there is some positive desire to live; some active wish that life should be prolonged. This whole passage 1 Peter 3:10-12 is taken, with some slight variations, from Psalms 34:12-16. In the Psalm this expression is, “What man is he that desireth life, and loveth many days, that he may see good?” The sense is substantially the same. It is implied here that it is right to love life, and... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 1 Peter 3:11

Let him eschew evil - Let him avoid all evil. Compare Job 1:1.And do good - In any and every way; by endeavoring to promote the happiness of all. Compare the notes at Galatians 6:10.Let him seek peace, and ensue it - Follow it; that is, practice it. See the Matthew 5:9 note; Romans 12:18 note. The meaning is, that a peaceful spirit will contribute to length of days:A peaceful spirit - a calm, serene, and equal temper of mind - is favorable to health, avoiding those corroding and distracting... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - 1 Peter 3:1-12

In the home and the church (3:1-12)Another sphere where Christians should display the character of Christ is the home. Wives can display a Christlike character through an attitude of submission to their husbands, even though the husbands may be unbelievers. By the wives’ good conduct and quiet spirit, the husbands may be won for God (3:1-4). Some women of Old Testament times, in particular Sarah, are good examples of a wife’s conduct (5-6).Christian husbands should not act thoughtlessly or... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - 1 Peter 3:10

For, He that would love life, And see good days, Let him refrain his tongue from evil, And his lips that they speak no guile: And let him turn away from evil, and do good; Let him seek peace, and pursue it. For the eyes of the Lord are upon the righteous, And his ears unto their supplication: But the face of the Lord is upon them that do evil. The apostle here quoted Psalms 34:12ff, but with variations from both the Hebrew and Septuagint (LXX) texts; but, as Mason said, "The divergence is... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - 1 Peter 3:10

1 Peter 3:10. For he that will love life,— He that would enjoy life. See Psalms 34:12. The apostle here urges in favour of the virtue which he recommends, that by this the comforts of life will be secured; 1Pe 3:10-11 the favour of God engaged 1Pe 3:12 and the malice of men in a great degree disarmed, 1 Peter 3:13, &c.—three arguments of very great weight and importance. This passage seems to be brought in, to anticipate an objection, which would very naturally arise in their minds: "Our... read more
