Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 2 Samuel 21:18

A battle in Gob - In the parallel passage (marginal reference), “Gezer” is named as the field of this battle. However, Gath is named 2 Samuel 21:20, 2 Samuel 21:22 in a way to make it probable that Gath was the scene of all the battles. The Septuagint in this verse has “Gath.” read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 2 Samuel 21:19

The Hebrew text is manifestly very corrupt. First, for “Jaare-oregim,” 1 Chronicles 20:5 gives us the reading Jair. “Oregim” has evidently got in by a transcriber’s error from the line below, where “oregim” is the Hebrew for “weavers.” Again, the word the “Bethlehemite” is very doubtful. It is supported by 2 Samuel 23:24, but it is not found in the far purer text of 1 Chronicles 20:5, but instead of it we find the name of the Philistine slain by Elhanan, “Lahmi the brother of Goliath the... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - 2 Samuel 21:1-22

21:1-24:25 MISCELLANEOUS MATTERSThe writer of 2 Samuel has finished his historical record of David’s reign. Since the story of David’s sin with Bathsheba, the writer has mainly been concerned with showing how this one event changed the course of David’s life. He now returns and records various other stories and poems to show other difficulties David faced during his reign. He shows also how God cared for him during those difficulties. (The story of David’s closing years is given in the opening... read more

REGARDING THE SLAUGHTER OF THE GIANTS OF GATH"After this there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; then Sibbecai the Hushathite slew Saph, who was one of the descendants of the giants. And there was again war with the Philistines at Gob; and Elhanan the son of Jaareoregim, the Bethlehemire, slew Goliath the Gitrite, the shaft of whose spear was like a weaver's beam. And there was war again at Gath, where there was a man of great stature, who had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - 2 Samuel 21:19

2 Samuel 21:19. A battle in Gob with the Philistines— Houbigant, with whom Calmet agrees, observes, that both here and in the next verse, the reading of the parallel place, 1Ch 20:4-5 is to be preferred. It is there read, in Gezur, a city on the borders of Israel, near the Philistines; and as David slew Goliath, our translators, 2Sa 21:19 have inserted the words, the brother of. There can be no question, we think, that the text must be corrected from the parallel place in Chronicles. Houbigant... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - 2 Samuel 21:15-22

B. Four Giant Killers 21:15-22This record emphasizes the supernatural character of the victories David was able to enjoy because God fought for him by using various men in his army."The lists of heroes and heroic exploits that frame the poetic centre-piece represent human instrumentality, but not the underlying reality, which is Yahweh." [Note: Gordon, p. 298.] The pericope may describe what happened when David was fighting the Philistines early in his reign (cf. 2 Samuel 5:18-25), probably... read more
