Expositor's Bible Commentary - 2 Samuel 6:1-23

CHAPTER VIII.THE ARK BROUGHT UP TO JERUSALEM.2 Samuel 6:1-23.THE first care of David when settled on the throne had been to obtain possession of the stronghold of Zion, on which and on the city which was to surround it he fixed as the capital of the kingdom and the dwelling-place of the God of Israel. This being done, he next set about bringing up the ark of the testimony from Kirjath-jearim, where it had been left after being restored by the Philistines in the early days of Samuel. David’s... read more

The ark brought into David’s city (2 Samuel 6:12-19 ) 5. Michal’s mockery of David (2 Samuel 6:20-23 ) It is of importance to read 1 Chronicles 13:0 for a better understanding of how the ark was brought from Kirjathjearim to David’s city. The book of Chronicles contains these larger records... read more

L.M. Grant

L. M. Grant's Commentary on the Bible - 2 Samuel 6:1-23

David's kingdom having been established, he is rightly concerned that God should have His true place as in highest authority over Israel. The ark was the symbol of the throne of God, yet had been in the obscurity of the house of Abinidab in Baale (or Kirjath-Jearim -- Joshua 15:9). Thus, through the history of Saul, God's authority was obscured, but David wants this in the place of highest prominence. He therefore gathers thirty thousand chosen men of Israel in view of his commendable purpose.... read more

“ GOING AND GROWING ” CONQUERING FOES (2 Samuel 5:0 ) The title of this lesson is the literal rendering of 2 Samuel 5:10 , “David went on and grew great.” The margin reads, “going and growing.” First, he overcame the inhabitants of Jerusalem known as the Jebusites and, capturing the city, made it his capital (2 Samuel 5:6-9 ). The parallel passage in 1 Chronicles 11:4-9 will show the two accounts to complement and confirm one another, Samuel being the more biographic and analistic and... read more

The People's Bible by Joseph Parker - 2 Samuel 6:1-23

Care of the Ark 2 Samuel 6:0 IN the second verse we read "David arose." A new passion seized him; a sudden enthusiasm stirred him like a great wind from heaven. We cannot account for these inspirations, excitements, new consecrations and purposes in life: "The wind bloweth where it listeth, and thou hearest the sound thereof, but canst not tell whence it cometh, and whither it goeth: so is every one that is born of the Spirit" to new life, new force, new duty. Sometimes we say, Why did not men... read more

(3) And they set the ark of God upon a new cart, and brought it out of the house of Abinadab that was in Gibeah: and Uzzah and Ahio, the sons of Abinadab, drave the new cart. (4) And they brought it out of the house of Abinadab which was at Gibeah, accompanying the ark of God: and Ahio went before the ark. I always feel concern, when David undertakes anything without first consulting the Lord. We read of his conferring with his captains on the removal of the ark, but nothing is said of his... read more

Matthew Henry's Concise Commentary on the Bible - 2 Samuel 6:1-5

1-5 God is present with the souls of his people, when they want the outward tokens of his presence; but now David is settled in the throne, the honour of the ark begins to revive. Let us learn hence, to think and to speak highly of God; and to think and speak honourably of holy ordinances, which are to us as the ark was unto Israel, the tokens of God's presence, Matthew 28:20. Christ is our Ark; in and by him God manifests his favour, and accepts our prayers and praises. The ark especially... read more

The First Attempt ends Sadly v. 1. Again, David gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, the captains and leaders of the army, together with the best soldiers of the nation, thirty thousand. v. 2. And David arose and went with all the people that were with him, from Baale of Judah, to Kirjath-baal or Kirjath-jearim, to bring up from thence the ark of God, which had been in the house of Abinadab some seventy years, since the time that the Philistines had returned this trophy, 1 Samuel... read more

Solemn transfer of the Ark of Mount Zion and establishment of regular divine service2 Samuel 6:1-231Again David [And David again1] gathered together all the chosen men of Israel, thirty thousand. 2And David arose and went with all the people that were with him from Baale of Judah, to bring up from thence the ark of God, whose name is called by the name of the Lord of hosts that dwelleth between the cherubims [which is called by the name of Jehovah of hosts who sitteth on the cherubim].2... read more

2 Samuel DEATH AND LIFE FROM THE ARK 2Sa_6:1 - 2Sa_6:12 . I. The first section 2Sa_6:1 - 2Sa_6:5 describes the joyful reception and procession. The parallel account in 1 Chronicles states that Baalah, or Baale, was Kirjath-jearim. Probably the former was the more ancient Canaanitish name, and indicates that it had been a Baal sanctuary. If so, the presence of the ark there was at once a symbol and an omen, showing Jehovah’s conquest over the obscene and bloody gods of the land, and... read more
