Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - 2 Chronicles 25:27

After the time ... - The writer means that the violent death of Amaziah followed on his apostasy, not closely in point of time - for it must have been at least 15 years after 2 Chronicles 25:25 - nor as, humanly speaking, caused by it; but, in the way of a divine judgment, his death was a complete fulfillment of the prophecy of 2 Chronicles 25:16. read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - 2 Chronicles 25:1-28

Prosperity followed by disaster (25:1-28:27)Succeeding kings of Israel are passed over in silence (2 Kings 13:1-25). Judah was to have nothing to do with the northern kingdom, not even to the hiring of Israelite soldiers. Amaziah took the advice, and was rewarded with victory in a battle against Edom. But the victory, instead of increasing his dependence on God, gave him a feeling of independence. He turned from God and worshipped idols. The ungodly northern kingdom then became God’s instrument... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - 2 Chronicles 25:1-28

I. Amaziah ch. 25The Chronicler selected three events from Amaziah’s reign to teach important spiritual lessons.First, Amaziah followed the Mosaic Law faithfully in dealing with the people who had killed his father (2 Chronicles 25:1-4; cf. Deuteronomy 24:16). These actions transpired at the beginning of his reign.Second, the king obeyed God partially in his war with the Edomites (2 Chronicles 25:5-16). He unwisely hired mercenary soldiers to help him rather than seeking the Lord’s help (2... read more

Ellicott's Commentary for English Readers - 2 Chronicles 25:26

(26) First and last.—The former and the latter. The chronicler adds his usual formula.Behold, are they not written.—The Hebrew is faulty here. “Behold, they are written” is the customary phrase in the Chronicles (2 Chronicles 20:34; 2 Chronicles 24:27); “are they not written” being that of Kings. In the Hebrew text here the two phrases are blended. Some- MSS., and the Syriac, Vulg., and Arabic read, “Behold, they are written.” But it is possible that hinnâm (“behold they”) is here a corruption... read more

(27) Now after the time that Amaziah did turn away from following the Lord.—This clause is added by the chronicler, not so much with the aim of assigning a date, as of asserting the real connection between Amaziah’s defection from Jehovah, and the calamities that overtook him. Virtually he calls attention to the fulfilment of the prophecy of 2 Chronicles 25:16. read more
