Adam Clarke

Adam Clarke's Commentary on the Bible - Numbers 13:13

Sethur, the son of Michael - It would have been strange had the numerous searches after the explanation of the mystical number 666, Revelation 13:18 ; Revelation 17:5 , met with nothing to their purpose in the name of this son of Michael. סתור Sethur , from סתר sathar , to hide or conceal, signifies hidden or mysterious, and includes in it the numerical letters of the No. 666: ס 60, + ת 400, + ו 6, + ר 200, = 666. But of what utility can such expositions be to any subject... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Numbers 13:4

These were their names. None of these names occur elsewhere, except those of Caleb and Joshua. The order of the tribes is the same as in Joshua 1:1-18 ; except that Zebulun is separated from the other sons of Leah, and placed after Benjamin, while the two sons of Joseph are separated from one another. The Pulpit Commentary - Numbers 13:6

The younger son of Jephunneh, the father of Othniel, was a Kenaz ( קְנַז ), and so was Caleb's grandson (see on Joshua 15:17 ; 1... read more

Numbers 13:11. Of Joseph The name of Joseph is elsewhere appropriated to Ephraim, here to Manasseh; possibly to aggravate the sin of the ruler of this tribe, who did so basely degenerate from his noble ancestor. read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Numbers 13:1-33

The twelve spies (13:1-33)Israel pushed on towards the promised land. The long and tiresome journey through the wilderness of Paran was relieved by stoppages at various points where the people set up camp for a few days (see 10:12; 11:35; 12:16; 13:3). As they moved nearer to Canaan, Moses sent twelve spies, one from each tribe, to see what they could find out about the country - its terrain, its people, its defences and its productivity (13:1-20). The spies probably split up, going in... read more
