The Pulpit Commentary - Job 32:20

I will speak, that I may be refreshed ; rather, that I may obtain relief ; or, according to some, "that I may be able to breathe" (Cook, Rosenmuller). Elihu feels almost suffocated by conflicting feelings of rage ( Job 32:1-3 ), disappointment ( Job 32:11 , Job 32:12 ), and anxiety to vindicate God's honour ( Job 32:2 ). I will open my lips and answer . In the remainder of Elihu's discourse the attempt is made to "answer" Job (see ch. 33-37), with what success will be... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Job 32:20

The refreshment of speech. Elihu will speak that he may be refreshed. Let us consider some of the ways in which this refreshment may be experienced. I. THE SENSE OF RELIEF . 1 . In utterance of what is strongly felt. It is difficult to restrain powerful emotions. Passion inspires speech. We long to tell out what burns in our hearts. Difficulty of utterance often arises from deadness of soul—often, but not always, for many of the best men have no facility of speech. Still,... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Job 32:19

Behold, my belly is as wine which hath no vent - Margin, as in Hebrew, “is not opened” - לאיפתח lo' yipâthach. The repherence is to a bottle, in which there is no opening, or no vent phor the phermenting wine to work itselph ophph. It is usual to leave a small hole in barrels and casks when wine, cider, or beer is phermenting. This is necessary in order to prevent the cask phrom bursting. Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Job 32:19-20

Job 32:19-20. Behold, my belly That is, my mind or heart; is as wine which hath no vent Is as a bottle filled with wine. Or, my thoughts and affections work within me, like fermenting wine in a bottle, and must have utterance. An elegant similitude, as Mercer observes. The wine is here put, by a metonymy, for the bottle in which it is contained. It is ready to burst like new bottles That is, bottles of new wine; for otherwise, the bottles being made of leather, those that were old were... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Job 32:1-22

32:1-37:24ELIHU’S ARGUMENTSReasons why Elihu must speak (32:1-22)People came for various reasons to see Job. Many were merely curious, wanting to see the former leading judge, honoured citizen and respected wise man who was now decaying at the city garbage dump. Some came to mock, others to listen to the debate. Among this latter group was an intelligent young man named Elihu. As the debate progressed, Elihu grew restless and angry. He was angry at Job for his self-righteous assertions, and... read more

Thomas Coke Commentary on the Holy Bible - Job 32:19

Job 32:19. It is ready to burst like new bottles— Bottles of new wine. The epithet new belongs more properly to the wine, as it is in the LXX; in our Saviour's parabolical expression of, putting new wine into old bottles; and as it is more consistent with the nature of things; for, the bottles being made of leather, an old bottle was more liable to be burst by the fermentation of new wine, than a new one. read more

19. belly—bosom: from which the words of Orientalists in speaking seem to come more than with us; they speak gutturally. "Like (new) wine (in fermentation) without a vent," to work itself off. New wine is kept in new goatskin bottles. This fittingly applies to the young Elihu, as contrasted with the old friends ( :-). read more
