Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Job 38:5

Who hath laid the measures thereof - That is, as an architect applies his measures when he rears a house. If thou knowest - Or rather, “for thou knowest.” The expression is wholly ironical, and is designed to rebuke Job’s pretensions of being able to explain the divine administration.Or who hath stretched the line upon it - As a carpenter uses a line to mark out his work; see the notes at Isaiah 28:17. The earth is represented as a building, the plan of which was laid out beforehand, and which... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Job 38:6

Whereupon are the foundations - Margin, “sockets.” The Hebrew word (אדן 'eden) means “a basis,” as of a column, or a pedestal; and then also the foundation of a building. The language here is evidently figurative, comparing the earth with an edifice. In building a house, the securing of a proper foundation is essential to its stability; and here God represents himself as rearing the earth on the most permanent and solid basis. The word is not used in the sense of sockets, as it is in the... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Job 38:4-5

Job 38:4-5. Where wast thou when I laid the foundations of the earth? When I settled it as firm upon its own centre as if it had been built upon the surest foundations? Then thou wast nowhere; thou hadst no being: thou art but of yesterday; and dost thou presume to judge of my eternal counsels? I made the world without thy help, and therefore can govern it without thy advice or direction. Declare who hath laid the measures thereof Who hath prescribed how long, and broad, and deep it... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Job 38:6-7

Job 38:6-7. Whereupon are the foundations thereof fastened? This strong and durable building hath no foundations but God’s power, which hath marvellously established it upon itself. Who laid the corner-stone? By which the several walls are joined and fastened together, and in which, next to the foundations, the stability of a building consists. The sense is, Who was it that built this goodly fabric, and established it so firmly that it cannot be moved. When the morning stars sang... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Job 38:1-38

38:1-42:17GOD’S ANSWERControl of the natural world (38:1-38)Possibly an approaching storm was what prompted Elihu’s poetic praise of the God of nature (see 36:27-37:5). If so, that storm now broke, and through it the voice of God spoke to Job. Job had repeatedly challenged God to a contest. God now accepts (38:1-3).In his reply, God asks Job questions that he cannot answer, in order to show him how little he knows of the mind and activity of the Almighty. God begins his ironical questioning of... read more

Expository Notes of Dr. Thomas Constable - Job 38:1-6

G. The Cycle of Speeches between Job and God 38:1-42:6Finally, God spoke to Job and gave revelation that Job had been demanding for so long (cf. Job 13:22; Job 31:35). There was now no need for the middleman that Job had requested who could mediate between them (cf. Job 9:33; Job 16:19). Yahweh spoke directly to Job, and Job had the opportunity to respond directly to God."God challenged both Satan and Job by confronting them with his wondrous works. And since Job himself is the divine work by... read more
