The Pulpit Commentary - Psalms 27:4

One thing have I desired of the Lord, that will I seek after . A most emphatic introduction of the new topic! Amid all my joy and jubilation, there is still one thing which I need, which I entreat Jehovah to grant —that thing I shall continue to seek after until I obtain it, viz. that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life. The psalmist is evidently debarred access to the sanctuary; he feels his exclusion from it a terrible privation; he longs to be there—to... read more

The Pulpit Commentary - Psalms 27:5

For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion; in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me. This is not to be understood literally. David means that his spirit will find a refuge with God in times of trouble, not (as some Jewish expositors argue) that he will actually hide from his enemies inside the tabernacle. From such a sacrilege he would have shrunk. He shall set me up upon a rock (comp. Psalms 18:2 ; Psalms 61:2 ). The "Rock" is God himself, who is always... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Psalms 27:4

One thing have I desired of the Lord - One main object; one thing that I have especially desired; one thing which has been the object of my constant wish. This ruling desire of his heart the psalmist has more than once adverted to in the previous psalms (compare Psalms 23:6; Psalms 26:8); and he frequently refers to it in the subsequent psalms. That will I seek after - As the leading object of my life; as the thing which I most earnestly desire. That I may dwell in the house of the Lord - See the... read more

Albert Barnes' Notes on the Whole Bible - Psalms 27:5

For in the time of trouble - When I am surrounded by dangers, or when affliction comes upon me.He shall hide me - The word used here means to hide; to secrete; and then, to defend or protect. It would properly be applied to one who had fled from oppression, or from any impending evil, and who should be “secreted” in a house or cavern, and thus rendered safe from pursuers, or from the threatening evil.In his pavilion - The word “pavilion” means “tent” or “tabernacle.” The Hebrew word - סכה... read more

Joseph Benson's Commentary of the Old and New Testaments - Psalms 27:4

Psalms 27:4. One thing have I desired of the Lord It greatly encouraged David’s confidence in God, that he was conscious to himself of an entire affection to him and his ordinances, and that he was in his element when he was in the way of his duty, and in the way of increasing his acquaintance with God. If our hearts can witness for us, that we delight in God above any creature, we may from thence take encouragement to depend upon him; for it is a proof that we are of those whom he protects... read more

Psalms 27:5-6. In the time of trouble he shall hide, or, hath hid me Justly do I prize the house and service of God so highly, both because I am under such vast obligations to him for his former protection and favours, and because all my confidence and hope of security depend upon him; in the secret of his tabernacle Into which mine enemies cannot come; or, as it were in the secret of his tabernacle he shall hide me That is, in a place as safe as the holy of holies, termed God’s... read more

Bridgeway Bible Commentary - Psalms 27:1-14

Psalms 26-28 Living uprightlyDavid appeals to God to support him against those who plot evil against him. God has done a work of grace in his life, and this causes him to hate the company of worthless people and make every effort to live the sort of life that pleases God (26:1-5). He desires righteousness, delights in worship, loves to spend hours in the house of God and enjoys telling others about God (6-8). He therefore asks that he will not suffer the same end as the wicked (9-10). Though... read more

Coffman Commentaries on the Bible - Psalms 27:4

"One thing have I asked of Jehovah, that will I seek after:That I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of my life,To behold the beauty of Jehovah,And to inquire in his temple.""That I may dwell in the house of Jehovah all the days of my life" (Psalms 27:4). The psalmist's great desire was to "Dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of his life." This of course is like the last line of the Shepherd Psalm, a strong indication of Davidic authorship. Significantly, Dahood's comment... read more
